Weak signal with condenser mic

Hi, I have been in an eternal downward spiral for several weeks trying to update my audio set up. I finally got everything in working order but I'm having problems getting a good signal with my Samson condenser mic. I am currently wanting to record some acoustic guitar and would like to reduce the amount of white noise at least by half. I purchased a Yamaha USB mixer and found the mic pres to be kind of weak so I took someones word for it and purchased a Firebox by Presonus thinking that it would do the trick. I'm still having a problem getting good levels. In order to get the audio to a sufficient level I need to crank the gain up to a max of +30, hardly reasonable as it causes a tremendous amount of white noise. Also, if I'm more than 6 inches from the mic with the gain maxed my signal doesn't even come close to hitting the yellow unless I yelp at a high enough volume.

I'm running Logic 8.0.1 on a 1.8 ghz G5 with 2.5 gb of ram. I'm switching between the Yamaha USB mixer and Firebox recording interface. I have tried buying better quality mic cables, isolating my acoustic guitar a good distance from my Mac, putting gates on my channel strips, moving the mic around to different positions, etc. I'm wondering if maybe it's my mic and if so how can I check that? Any recommendations are very appreciated.

The game is maximum game with minimum noise and quite frankly, most of the "semi-pro" USB/FW interfaces suffer in one of the following areas: preamp gain, noise, or A/D conversion.

I would highly recommend the Apogee Duet. It is the ONLY FW/USB interface (under $500) that I have heard that is truly "pro" quality with respect to gain, noise, and A/D converters. I record my acoustic guitar thru it using an AKG C414 Mic and I can crank the gain up on the Duet's preamp to the point where I can tell if my DVD player is "on" on in the next room because it has this low background noise. I have so much gain that my problem is finding a quiet place to play that is also "neutral" with respect to reverb.

I was at a friends house the other day and he has a Focusrite Sapphire FW interface. Is about the same price as the Duet but not as powerful and clean.

If the Duet is out of your range, you may consider buying a dedicated preamp like the Symetrix dual channel preamp (<http://www.bswusa.com/proditem.asp?item=302S>) to give your signal a big boost in gain. For the price ($279) it is a very good dual channel preamp.

Good Luck!!!

I've just discovered this same problem with the Firebox. As others said, the best solution is simply to get some better Pres, but in the mean time, have you activated the +12dB boost in the Firebox's control panel? I hadn't even installed the control panel or mixer applications until I came across this issue the other day (I've had the Firebox for about a year now). The +12dB helps a lot, though I've found it to be a little quiet still.
