Time Machine - Error Code 10657

Did you manage to fix this. I am having the same problem?

The CHOWN statement has a problem with the parameters. I also noticed after fixing the permissions of the Pictures folder and subfolders (was "700", now "755"), I was still experiencing the iPhoto launch problem.

My solution, after noticing that I could go to Terminal and launch the application from /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/Mac OS/iPhoto, was that ownership of the files in the application was not correct.

My fix:

Bring up the Get Info on the iPhoto application in the Applications folder and manually add myself as a user. (I guess you could also add "Everyone".) This solved the issue to me.

Caveat: Launching iPhoto from the old icon on the Dock still returned the error! (Huh?!) I had to launch the application from the Applications folder, then use the Keep In Dock function and trashed the old iPhoto icon.

Dear Aaron... it's great that you posted this information... but us novices are hard pressed to understand what your solution really was. I have to pack up my machine and travel and EVERY SINGLE ONE of the applications come up with that 10657 Error message. I tried going into terminal but there wasn't enough info for me to really know what I'm doing! I can always call apple support but I have to have this packed up by 9 am tomorrow morning and that's not enough time... would you have time to give me a little more direction? Thanks! I thought Mac was supposed to be problem free... I've had this thing since March and have had nothing but problem after problem... I think they give themselves far too much credit!

How is it that this question is classified as Solved when not everyone knows how to follow that 'solution' and NO ONE has explained what the error code 10657 MEANS?

I too am having this problem. And this is true for both my Macbook and my Macpro. I also tried two backup drives ---the LaCie, and the Maxor. In all cases I get this error message for my time machine backups. I really don't know where to go for an answer. Does anyone have any help for this?

I got the solution to this problem at the Genius Bar.
As they explained it, Time Machine is software that saves files on the backup drive in a format that can only be read by Time Machine. So, when you open Time Machine, you can click on any file and it will open.
If you try to open a file directly from the backup drive, it needs a program to open it, and if Time Machine is not open, you get the error message.

If your computer crashes, when you get it fixed (or get a new Mac)and when you connect the backup drive, Time Machine will recognize it, will ask you if you want to associate it with your computer, and when you say yes, all your backed-up files are availabel and copied back into the computer.

I tried your solution for this problem by opening timemachine and then then iphoto but still no joy. Interesting enough I can open other files like pdf and mac office, just not iTunes, iPhoto etc. Any other suggestions?
