No audio output?

This is probably an stupid question, but I'm stuck so I'll have to ask it anyway. Just upgraded to Logic 7 from Garageband. Using a Tascam US-122 audio interface into my PowerMac G4 (10.3.9). Opened on of my Garageband projects in Logic 7, and it played just fine. In Garageband, for "real instrument" tracks (ie. those coming through my US-122 in my case), you can monitor(hear) the instrument being played (keyboard, guitar, whatever) in Garageband. When I click on such a "real instrument" track from that project in Logic 7, I hear nothing. At least in terms of MIDI, the US-122 seems to be working, as I can play & hear software instruments via MIDI events from my external keyboard (coming through the US-122). So MIDI events are getting to Logic through the US-122, but either audio is not, or I''ve somehow not setup Logic properly. I've already setup everything through the "Audio MIDI setup" system utility. I've been using the US-122 with Garageband for some time without any issues. Would appreciate any help as this is driving me crazy!!

What "real instrument" track are your referring to. I'm willing to bet that you are confusing an Instrument Track with a GM MIDI Track, which requires an external device to listen to (you're not the first and there have been numerous discussions about this throughout the forum). Refer to your Logic Manual (p. 111) for the difference in the types of tracks (I believe that these differences are also covered in the Logic for GB Users - or something like that). Once done, select an Audio Instrument track and add an instrument to the track. You should then hear the desired instrument as played from your keyboard.

Thanks for the reply Jord. In Garageband, there are only two types of tracks "Real Instrument" and "Software" tracks. Real instrument tracks are for recording external sound sources and/or for playing pre-recorded loops. Software tracks are for the internal software instruments and/or loops of those software instruments. I realize that Logic has a third type of track, which is the MIDI track. I was assuming that if I open my Garageband project in Logic, the real instrument tracks would become audio tracks, and that when playing external instruments through my US-122 interface, I should be able to hear the audio when I play the instrument. I also tried creating a new project in Logic and created an audio track that way, same outcome -- no audio is heard when I play the external instrument. As I mentioned though, the US-122 works great with Garageband. Do I need to select something on the audio track in Logic to be able to monitor sound? I have the Harmon-Kardin SoundSticks, which I'm currently using for audio output. Would love to hear any additional ideas as to what I'm probably missing here.

Thanks again...

I should have known you were referring to GarageBand track types (I hear it from my clients... it just didn't click this time). So, you are using an Audio track.

Are you able to record any input to an Audio Track? You may also want to check your Audio Hardware & Driver prefs. Another thing to check is how your interface is set up your Audio MIDI Setup utility.

Thanks Jord. I have verified that MIDI information is making it through the US-122 into Logic fine, as I'm able to play (and hear) software instruments played through my external keyboard (via MIDI). It's just the audio going through the US-122, or my setup in Logic that's causing my headache. I've gone through the audio/MIDI setup, and Logic seems to "see" the US-122 just fine. As I mentioned, this all worked just fine for me in Garageband, which leads me to believe that I'm somehow not setting up the audio track in logic to be able to monitor external signals coming into that track. One thing though, is that I also don't see any level indication at all when I play an external instrument on the audio track, which would seem to indicate no signal is even coming in.

If you are arming your audio track and not seeing any levels when you are playing your keyboard, it leads me to believe that your audio interface needs to be set up in your Audio Hardware & Drivers prefs. Check your prefs to see that CoreAudio is enabled.

Also remember that this isn't Garageband. 🙂
