Telephone Effect

Hi! I'm doing a video project on iMovie, but I need to add some vocals that sound like they are coming through a telephone. I've been messing with some vocal effects on GarageBand to try & replicate this sound but have been mostly unsuccessful. Has anyone had any luck doing this before and can give me some tips on the best way to get this sound? Alternatively, if anyone knows of any other [free] software that can do this & they could let me know I'd be really grateful.
Thanks in advance!

Telephone voices are characterised by the fact that the phone only transmits a narrow frequency spectrum, leaving out the high and low frequencies. So you might try to set your track to "basic" and then use the AUGraphicEQ plugin, cutting off frequencies from the high and low end of the spectrum until you like the sound. A bit of distortion (another plugin) makes it even better.
