Open the Universal Access pane of System Preferences, click on the Seeing tab, and turn off VoiceOver.

Funny, because I accidently turned on the speech mode on my macbook today. I was trying to adjust the volume using the F4 and F5 keys, but I must have used the "control" or "command" key instead of the "fn" key. I'm pretty sure that's how I activated it. Finally figured out how to turn it off... same solution as offered above.
