Q: No Wi-Fi connection on home network

Hi I hope someone may be able to help me. My iPhone is unable to connect to my home wi-fi box, although I can connect to other wi-fi box's. My wi-fi is supplied by Sky through a Netgear router. I have tried to do things on DCHP but to no avail. It seems to connect to the system due to asking a password, but does receive a signal. Does anyone have some ideas for me to try please!!

iPhone, Windows XP

    Peter Allen,

After entering the password, is it showing a valid IP address when you look at the settings? If it starts with 169.254 it is not a valid IP address, but a self assigned one.

If you are getting a self-assigned address the password for the network was probably entered incorrectly.

    Thank you,

    Nathan C.

I have been having a similar experience- I just recently had my iPhone replaced by Apple service. The old one never had any trouble connecting to my home network (Verizon) via Wi-Fi. However this new one won't seem to stay connected to it.

All of my settings from the old phone seem to have transferred over to the new one- upon its first sync everything transferred over. I did have to re-enter my WEP and voicemail passwords.

If I go to the Wi-Fi setup page under System, I see my network's name, it shows up with a lock icon next to it, and I get the "connected" signal icon in the status bar at the top of the phone. But, when I leave the System page, and for example go to download my email or to Safari, the status icon changes back to the "E", for Edge, that it uses when no wi-fi is available.

I know nothing about networks- just that I never changed any settings on either my iPhone or my network from the time I had the old one to the time I got this new one.

I suppose my question is whether there is another setting I need to be looking for, or what would make it keep dropping its connection- or any other thoughts on why this might be.

    Thanks,

    smpaudio,

In Settings -> Network where it shows the WiFi connected tap the ">" to the right of the network name.

What do you have for IP address, router address, and DNS?

    Thank you,

    Nathan C.

    It says:

    IP Address 169.254.78.55

Router, DNS, Search Domains and Client ID are all blank.

That IP address is a default assigned by the phone, so your phone is not getting an IP address assigned by the router. Some things to check:

in Settings/WiFi tap on the arrow to the right of your network name and tap "forget this network." They try to connect again.

Go to Settings/General/About - does your phone have a WiFi address? If it does make note of it. If not see: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559?viewlocale=en_US

Does your router have MAC address filtering enabled? If so you need to add the new phone to the Allowed table. This is where you need the WiFi address from above.

The phone does have a Wi-Fi address. I did the "forget" thing and re-logged in (re-entered my password) and now it seems to have stuck. Thanks!

All I can say about the Mac filtering is that I've been using only Macs on this network- about 8 in all, and no PC's. I'd have to do some research into that and find out how to change those settings.

But fortunately it looks like this did the trick- thanks SO much for your help, I truly appreciate it.

What probably happened when you restored the old phone's backup it copied the old phone's WiFi address into the new phone's profile, so the router detected a mismatch. Forgetting the network cleared out the old data.

MAC filtering has nothing to do with the type of computer (PC or Mac). the MAC (Media Access Control) address is the technical term for WiFi Address. Your router has a feature that allows you to list the specific computers that are allowed to use your network. Most people don't bother, but if you have this feature enabled you must enter the WiFi address (MAC address) of every computer on the network into the MAC filtering page on router before they can use the network.
