An ALARM goes off every day at 2 a.m. - don't know why, please help

Over a month ago an alarm started going off everyday at 2 a.m.. I have exhausted dif. avenues to try to determine why. The alarm sounds similar to an alarm clock, but starts out slow and then reaches a frantic crescendo...and I almost swear its length of time is increasing. The alarm lasts around a minute. I used the app. to check the system and it found no errors. During the alarm, I can perform any function, so it's not affecting usage, but am desperate to find out its cause "and" cure, plus I'm tired of it making me up in the middle of night. Thanks for any help.

Hi,

Guess what, I don't know....I think when it happens, waking me from sleep, I am so annoyed and perplexed, I am oblivious to everything except the alarm. But, good question. I will pay attention next time and let you know. i have again gone thru and checked everything I can think of on my computer...such as utilities, games, sys. prefs, apps., guides, troubleshooting....so far no luck.

Hi,

Found Activity Monitor....actually have opened it previously when searching for a solution but forgot as I've been all over my computer to where my mind is a blur. However since Process Names in Activity Monitor are in computerspeak, I don't know what to look for. Also, since it doesn't list time of day, a sure way of pinpointing the culprit, whatever is causing the alarm to go off may remain a mystery. However, I'm going to keep Activity Monitor open, and front and center....with a little luck, who knows.

No one has access to my computer....but keep looking over my shoulder to see if Candid Camera is there, or perhaps Ashton Kutcher has a new show where he pulls pranks on us commoners.

Click on the CPU usage column to sort the processes according to how much they are using the system. Hopefully, when the alarm is playing a process will appear for a bit and then subsequently disappear when the alarm is finished.

Hi,

Just is it certainly possible to wake a Mac via ethernet and maybe even turn it on. Not possible over airport, though, so if your only connexion to the external world is wireless, that's not it - and the wake for admin access BDAqua mentioned isn't relevant either. Er, I think.

Sure, System Preferences>Energy Saver>Options tab, there are 2 actually...

Hi,
Found it today....unchecked both boxes, just in case. Never had scheduled an on or off time. Also, I am connected to the web wirelessly, Airport Extreme.

I monitored activity in Activity Monitor/Active Processes and when alarm went off last night I first had to wake up screen, then checked activity.......alarm "did not register". I am thoroughly disappointed, but not really surprised. This is one very wicked alarm.

Hi, That's a relief if correct......but when it comes to hackers, they're very crafty and without conscience. Nothing registered on Activity Monitor when alarm went off, but today I did copy some logs from Activity Monitor such as:

Don't know how to interpret, but if the numbers after date represent time of day, the above would very closely, if not perfectly, represent the time alarm goes off.

Hi,
Nothing registered in Activity Monitor/Active Processes. My alarm is way too clever to be caught that way. Did copy some log info from system and console log, not sure if helpful or not, but here they are:

Don't know how to interpret, some appear to be the right time alarm goes off.

What Bluetooth devices do you have? It looks as though the sequence is being initiated by something to do with that, though I don't really know how to read these things (and can Bluetooth wake a machine from shutdown?). What settings do you have in the Bluetooth panel of System Preferences? What happens if you turn Bluetooth off (and disable everything you can find!) under the Settings tab before you go to bed?

Your questions: What Bluetooth devices do you have? It looks as though the sequence is being initiated by something to do with that, though I don't really know how to read these things (and can Bluetooth wake a machine from shutdown?). What settings do you have in the Bluetooth panel of System Preferences? What happens if you turn Bluetooth off (and disable everything you can find!) under the Settings tab before you go to bed?

Whew, you asked a lot of questions. First, the easy answer: I have nothing Bluetooth....just another thing I'd probably mess up. I don't know how to read the logs either, but they did sound ominous. Can Bluetooth wake a machine? Have absolutely no idea. Anything that comes with a manual frightens me. I'll check into disabling everything in Settings. Sounds like a good idea. But, I'm getting to the point where I think my problem is unsolvable. I've been given many good ideas on what to check and what to do, but so far nothing seems to work. I feel like a victim of a warped sense of humor.

Sorry. That one was rhetorical! (Not that I'd object to an answer...)

I'd still recommend disabling Bluetooth stuff. If you don't have any, it is just a security hazard anyway. I don't think it is related, though. I googled "IOBluetoothHCIController::restartShutdownWL" and it seems it is a normal part of the wake up/start up routine. I checked and I see the same in my system.log.

Do the logs have any entries after 01:56? When is the next entry?

Like I said, I don't really know, but the rest of the entries look pretty normal to me. I wonder why you get IOBluetoothHCIController::restartShutdownWL even if Bluetooth is disabled. (It's off on my machine and I still see this.) Not that it matters.
