Using bluetooth headset causes OSX to freeze regularly

I'm having problems using my Bluetooth Plantronics P590 headset. It causes OSX to become unstable. I've been using it for 2 days, and had about 4 crashes (OSX locking up) during that time. When I use the headset, lots of times my bluetooth Mighty Mouse becomes jittery (annoying but not more than that, and solvable by turning the mouse off and on). However, sometimes it just completely freezes my machine (the screen turns grey and a message appears in several languages saying I need to restart my computer by holding the power button). The last log sent to Apple looks like this:

Tue May 20 09:09:06 2008

When using the headset in combination with Skype, there are outgoing audio troubles (see http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=137331). I do feel though that that is a Skype problem, because I can record audio fine using Audacity. I just thought I'd mention it here as it might be important.

So basically the problem seems to be that using the bluetooth headset compromises the stability of OSX. I am using two more bluetooth devices (Mighty Mouse + wireless Apple keyboard).

I am now using my USB headset again and things work as expected, lockups do not appear anymore so it really seems to be related to the bluetooth headset.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Have gotten at least one KP using Jabra BT8010 in mono mode. Other problems involve constant static output, even when the headset is either in a completely silent room or off entirely (?!). When the headset is unpaired and re-paired, the static goes away... But so does every other signal coming from the headset save button presses. Headset works fine with mobile phone and tested PC.

Stock MacBook Penryn, 10.5.4.

Hi there guys. I wanted to also add to this post with another question on top of the issues that we all are having. how many of you have bluetooth keyboards and mighty mice?

I have a standard keyboard and mouse and was wondering if this issue is only happening with the wireless setup?

I am concerned that what is going on is that the signal is getting screwed up trying to fight with the ones that are being sent from the other two items connected to the computer.

I haven't tried using just the headset alone and plug my corded keyboard and mouse back in yet. But wanted to see if we all are experiencing the same issue because of it.

Same problem, I'm using a Kensington 33348 USB Bluetooth adapter and a Cardo S2 Headset. Have been using the Kensington for over 6 months with other devices now and then. Just paired the S2 headset today and have had two kernel panics when listening to music. Not Good. So I wonder if the problem is the Kensington, the Cardo, or OS X Bluetooth.

I just bought a Sony Ericsson HBH-DS220 Stereo Bluetooth Headset and my MBP froze after it had successfully paired with the headset. I had to long-hold the power key to turn off and reboot the machine. And more annoying things have happened afterwards. At the time of the freezing, I was also using a Logitech Bluetooth Laser Travel Mouse. After rebooting, I turned off the mouse. Under the Bluetooth menu, there is the option to choose between using the headset as headset or headphones. But only headset works for me. If I choose headphones, there would be no sound coming off my headset. Only headset mode works. This is very annoying. If I had searched this beforehand, I wouldn't have bought it. I would buy a normal mono headset instead.

I have Jabra 620s headphones and have the same problem.

I can get it to work sometimes but there seems to be some magic sequence to avoid getting crashes that I still can't decipher. I turn the headphones on, it asks if I want to accept it, I click on the yes and sometimes it plays, sometimes it doesn't. Once it's been accepted I can click on the Bluetooth pulldown and chose "use headphones" yet when I play sound from a browser window (which is what I bought the headphones for -to listen to streaming news) it will play through the computer or neither, which will mean a freeze is about to happen, which is incurable without hitting the kill switch. I have gotten it to play through the headphones but I'm not sure even why it works sometimes and others it doesn't.

Anybody been able to determine the magic sequence to make this work? Once it's playing it's fine. I don't use any other bluetooth devices. It' a brand new Macbook with the lastest system -the problem is Apple's not Jabra's since it does work fine once it's connected.

I suppose if people know the sequence they won't be here looking for it and Apple is no help.

Hi,

I have solved the issue by using a usb dongle from Callpod that was released last month. The product url is: http://www.callpod.com/products/drone

Have tested it so far with iChat, Skype, iSoftphone, eyeBeam with a Plantronics 510 and Motorola 500 headsets and it works perfectly.

While having to use a dongle when you have built-in bluetooth is a little painful, it's great to having the bluetooth headset working with my voip while travelling.

Murch.

I have been experiencing this same issue through several Leopard upgrades now and the problem has just gotten worse and worse. It has gotten to the point where I have just given up using my bluetooth headphones on my Mac. I hate to even mention it but they work perfectly on my Vista laptop.

I don't see any response from Apple anywhere even recognizing there is a problem, so my question is really is there any hope for us? I can't afford to go and spend another $50 just so I can use hardware that is already supposed to be working fine. Is there at least hope that bluetooth will be improved in Snow Leopard?

I also have a pair of Jabra 620s headphones.
I have experienced the kernel panic once due to iTunes and my bluetooth headphone. My Jabra 620s has been updated by the latest firmware.

Typically, it is connected weirdly and works. However, if it doesn't work sometimes, it requires a reboot of my OS X. My work-around to avoid a reboot is as follows:

1. Check your Macbook bluetooh is turned on.

2. Turn on your Jabra 620s.

3. Select 'Bluetooth menu/Jabra BT620s/Use headphones'.

4. The action at Step 3 is not effective at first. I don't know why. I always repeat the step 3 once again.

5. You can see 'Don't use headphones' instead of 'Use Headphones' in the menu. In 'Sound Preference', the audio output is selected to your bluetooth headphones automatically.

6. If you want to disconnect the headphones, you have to select 'Don't use headphones' first.

7. And then, turn off your Jabra. If you don't keep the step 6 and 7, you may need a rebooting of your OS X.

8. If you want to use Jabra again, go to the step 2.

The step 6 and 7 are extremely important in my case. If I don't keep the procedures, I was not able to use my Jabra 620s without a reboot.

P.S. One more thing. Check your Jabra 620s is configured as a stereo Headphones, not a headset.

I can get my Logitech BT620s to work fine with iTunes, at least, as long as I follow an exact sequence. Once the headphones have been "paired" I have to:
1. turn on the phones (center button on left ear -hold til ascending tone sounds)
2. open iTunes and play -sound will emanate from computer
3. under Bluetooth pulldown menu, select "headphones"
4. Bingo -should work fine
At least it does for me.
However it works for pretty much nothing else: I can't listen to anything from a web browser, for example.
And to think I bought a Mac thinking it would be the best!! Even Vista handles this better.
