MacBook Air - a sound disappeared

After an exit from the state of sleep my notebook gave out a system error, I overloaded him, whereupon a sound disappeared fully. That to do?

After 2 months normal working the sound in my Air again disappeared. My laptop was closed and connected to power. He was to remain in Standby mode, but the laptop was very hot, and when I opened it on the screen was already a picture kernel panic. As expected, after a reboot, the sound disappeared again. The man, who carry a laptop into service, told me that they changed the sound cable. This impression that this is happening because of overheating laptop.

Add me to the list of Macbook Air owners with the no audio problem. Same no output/input device. Can't increase/decrease volume. Last update was the core shutdown update, however sound worked even after that update up until today since the update was released. Don't know if they are related. Have searched but haven't found a solution but from what I'm reading here it could be a hardware issue. Anyone with updates on this problem please post your

I have the same issue with my MacBook Air also. It started today out of the blue. Both the speakers and headphones don't work, and the Sound System Preference doesn't show any output or input devices, although the System Profiler does show an Intel High Definition Audio item under the Audio (Built In) section.

I've also reset, tried booting in safe mode, and erased / reinstalled Leopard but no luck. I'll take it to Apple next.

I had the same problem as the rest of you: lost sound; lost the volume icon; attempting to adjust volume gives the "no" symbol; the audio menu shows no onboard sound device; and youtube and other videos will not play.

Read Ivan's posts above. He nailed the problem. It is the Audio board flex cable (part no. 922-8380). It's the cable that runs from the internal speaker assembly to the logic board. I ordered this cable from iFixit for $20, replaced it, and everything is back to normal. At first I thought perhaps internal heat melted the cable, but it doesn't run near the processor where the machine gets hot. I'm just guessing but I think the problem is that the cable has to be sharply bent in two places to fit properly (you can see the bends in the picture Ivan posted), and most likely the tiny wires inside are breaking. I examined my old cable with a magnifying lens, but even with magnification it's impossible to tell if the wires are broken because the plastic coating discolors at the bend points and obscures the wires inside. I think that some people are getting sound intermittently if the wires are damaged but not completely separated, or perhaps it depends on precisely which of the 5 or 6 wires have parted. Anyway, if your MBA is out of warranty you may want to try replacing the cable and see if that works before sending the MBA in for expensive repairs. I found the DIY repair is not too difficult, and the only tool required is a #0 screwdriver.

I've had nothing but problems w/ my Air:
1) SMART errors on the Hard Drive (bad sectors)
2) infamous Broken Hinge (and having to fight apple 3 times to get it fixed)
3) Frayed power adapter cable

And now this. I just got this Air back a week ago after having the hinge fixed, and now no audio. Worse, my warranty just expired.

This product is a lemon and I think a class action suit is in order.
