Would sampling a D 50 help ?
Anybody know of a place that sells a steam calliope sample?

Thanks, but not sure what that means . . .
Oh, I see. what I meant was a keyboard called Roland D 50 which -back in the days- had those breathy digital 'calliope' sounds on board for the very first time in the 80's.
But I have a feeling you're after 'the real thing' and AFAIK there is no library or sth that offers those sounds. A little googling brought up a few really existing instruments, as well as adresses and telephone nos in the CA area, so you could actually call, eventually grab a portable recording device, and just go for it.

Actually, the real thing would be nice. A very old sample CD called "American Heartland" has a sample, but I have trouble with the concept of paying $200 for a CD of samples from the 1980s meant to run on an old Akai sampler. The sound should be strained somehow, for this project, and so I think Sculpture combined with some other sounds may get me where I need to go.
sounds: steam calliope?
