Can't connect to iTunes Store if Safari and Mail are opened.
Operating in an AirPort network. Wirelessly, I can run Mail and Safari perfectly fine until I launch iTunes and access the store. And I have to quit Mail and Safari in order to connect iTunes Store contents. If connection with iTunes Store kinda freeze (even if iTunes app is responding), I won't be able to quit iTunes. In times like this, I occasionally can't access file and screen sharing, and AirPort Utility. Can't figure out which of these three apps, Mail, Safari and iTunes is causing the problem. I rule out hardware issue because I can surf without a glitch if iTunes is not accessing the store; or I can access iTunes Store if Safari and Mail aren't opened.
Driving me nuts. Anyone can figure out what's the cause? Does this have to do with the Safari 3.1 bug I have been reading in these forums?
Is it possible you are just running out of bandwidth? Mail.app especially can occasionally start performing tons of network activity, often in cases where a mail server is not "playing nice" or working as expected. (You can use the Activity Monitor to check.)
Seems that turning off IPv6 at System Preferences > Network > Advanced... > TCP/IP > Configure IPv6 kinda stop the disconnection when all Mail, Safari and Itunes Store running at the same time. Hmm...
Notice one thing. If any of my apps tries to communicate with their respective servers or websites when they're temporary inaccessible, this will kinda trigger the whole situation I'm yakking about. Example, using the Dictionary app to check a word and there's a long wait for a response. Then Safari, Mail and iTunes kinda have access problem too. Quit or force quit Dictionary and everything gets back to normal. Same goes for Mail accessing servers and Safari on websites. Puzzling.
Turning off IPv6 did help a bit as I don't get the situation as often as before.
If I search iTunes Store, I lose internet connection in everything and have to kill iTunes and other apps and then use either web or iTunes but not both.
Problem started in Feb and has not gone away, but doesn't happen running Vists, not that Vista/Windows users are immune from problems.
I've looked at router, firewall and everything else and stumped. I thought it was just a temporary glitch with new update or servers.... but 4 months later... I am always afraid to use iTunes Store now.
Hey, do you happen to have any firewall app installed?
I removed NetBarrier X5 from my system and the problem kinda went away. Monitored for six hours yesterday and today. So far so good. Anyway, I've written to Intego on the issue and see what they come back with. Previously, they admitted that NetBarrier crippled Firefox and fixed it already.
I pretty much have what you described on your problem. Strangely, both my Mac mini and MacBook Pro with NetBarrier installed do not have such problem. Only affected is the Mac Pro.
Looks like NetBarrier X5 v10.5.2 is the cause of the problem. Was told by Intego tech support to install 10.5.1 and they stopped short on mentioning anything else.
