ANDY

you rock 😉

Just for you newbies..................try this.......take your drums and send them to a space-designer buss (mid-tempo grooves, ala Levee Breaks, work best) Now get an IR of a wooden, warm room..........between .07 to 1.2 sec...so fairly short...now insert the ssl drum squash compressor after the the space designer (on same buss) and SQUUUAAASSHHHHH

Instant Jon Bonham, Phil Collins type of drum-sound

trix of the trade 😉

oh....don't forget to also have present the dry drums....so you don't lose your transients....

BTW I'm eager to learn more secrets of THE BIG DRUM SOUND.....I know many of you are PROS, please share some Dynamics trix........

I've heard of "multing" the bass guitar and kick drum into a comp to tighten low-end...but am not sure how to approach this...

With all due respect SvK, you've named the wrong person... go look in the mirror.

You're the one who rocks!

If anything, most of the tips that I collect and save have your moniker on it. They have helped to bring a millenium-challenged dude up to speed at times.

As for how I approach the bass/kick part is that I will lay a root drum track just to get the idea of what I want so I can lay down the bass (if anything, I have been been liking the Bass Amp plug-in these days). I will then build the drums around the bass, focusing the kick on the parts I want to emphasize with the bass. I will then do the "New York Style" of mixing, mixing a compressed kick and bass with the uncompressed (using Aux channels). That gives it a nice tight bottom (for me at least).

One more thing: the secret is also in the spaces between the notes. Let it breathe and you'll be amazed at how it comes out.

Heck, thank you! 🙂
I could almost compile a book with all of these tips...

If anything, I've have a template set up for the New York mix thang that I call up as soon as I believe that the song will need it (I'll transfer everything to a new song if I have to... it's all part of the crafting of the piece). Mind you, I try not to do it with every piece.

For me, I will admit that I don't always know how the drums will turn out in the final arrangement until I lay down the bass. Sometimes, the beat that I originally through would be the pulse of the song gets totally redone to match the bass. It's funny how I wouldn't have been caught doing that 20 years ago. These days, I won't think twice about it. Perhaps, my perspective of the craft changed as the years went by. 🙂

Oh well... I'm rambling now!
