IPhone Update from different computer

I am currently overseas in Spain but did not bring my MacBook that I sync my iPhone with. I was wondering if I will be able to install the 2.0 update connecting to my friends laptop which has iTunes.

I won't be back in the states for another 2 months so I would love to receive that update when it comes out without losing the data on my phone (I have a number of songs downloaded that have not been synced back yet) Thanks!!

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

Small bit of advice

If you got a friend in the U.S.A. with an iPhone, Have them connect their iPhone when the update comes out. But have them do a Download Only instead of Download and Update. Just incase they don't want to update their own iPhone.

Then if your friend goes into the following directory based on the OS they have. Then can possibly Instant Messenger File Transfer the file to you. You can then put it in the proper directory listed below based on your OS. So technically when you connect the iPhone it will detect the update already downloaded and offer an Update only option vs Download and Update.

This is just a suggestion in no way am I sure if this will work.

Location iPhone Software Update on Windows

Windows XP

C:/Documents and Settings / Username / Application Data / Apple Computer / iTunes / iPhone Software Update

The 1.1.4 and 2.0 Software update will be in this folder once it is released. Any firmware update you ever download is in that directory unless you have to delete it for some reason.

You may have to activate the Show hidden files and features on XP to see full file path. To do this do the following.

Launch My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View - Select view hidden files and folders - Apply - Now you can see the hidden files and folders.

Mac OSX

Launch Finder, Go to User Folder, Then Library, Then iTunes, Then iPhone Software Updates. This folder will contain all iPhone Software updates ever downloaded on the Mac.

Off the top of my head I can not remember the full path location on a Windows Vista machine. My apologies so if a user could post that if they have it.

But just like XP you may have to allow yourself to see hidden folders and files in vista. To do this do the following.

Launch Computer - Go to Organize - Folder & Search Options - View - Show hidden files and folders should be clicked, Apply. There you have it you can now see hidden files and folders.

So now that you know where the Updates are stored. All your friend does is send it via IM File Transfer so you can download. You than drop this file into the location posted above. And that should be it.

Again this is just a suggestion I do not make any promises this will actually work based on Geo Location and it may have to contact a server to verify iPhone activation so not sure how that will work in Spain.

Best of Luck
