My computer consistently locks up when Time Machine is running in background. At least I think it's Time Machine. Start using it as soon as I upgraded to Leopard. I am very tired of restarting everytime I return to my computer after being away an hour or two.
I am having the same problem. I just set up time machine a couple of days ago. It took 3 tries to get it to back up the first time. I never get an error message, but time machine freezes, then the finder freezes, and will not force quit. It does not happen every time it backs up, only about half the time. I have had to do a hard restart twice, as I am not even able to restart normally. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I verified the back up disk with disk utilities and it said it was fine.
I have the exact same issue as you. My MacBook backs up fine using Time Machine to Time Capsule. I agree, it is a iMac/TC/TM issue. No one has solved this.
Turn for the worst...
Now my MacBook won't backup to TC. Various error messages.
I finally called Apple. I rambled on about all the problems I've been having. Once I explained I can't even do a TM backup direct via ethernet on either machine I was told the problem rests within TC and my iMac/MacBook/TM are ok. Apple recommended I take the TC to an Apple store to have them run tests on it. If not near an apple store, they would have me ship it for an exam. I hope to take it in within the next couple of weeks.
That's not such a great answer. It means having to disable airport which I use for other computers in my house. However, it may be the only solution. Does anyone know what type of tests they run - I may get someone at work to do it.
Hello Apple. Since it appears in my case - and in others- to be an iMac/Time Capsule issue = can you please solve this? I've been waiting a long time. There is nothing wrong with my Time Capsule since my laptop backs up with no problem.
I am having a problem that is somewhat like that of the original poster. When Time machine is backing up in the background to a LaCie firewire disk my MacBook Pro sometimes freezes. This tends to happen progressively with some processes in some applications continuing to function for a while after others have stopped. After several minutes the whole lot reactivates. The problem doesn't happen when the backup disk is not attached.
I still have the problem of Time Machine freezing my iMac every time it launches to back up wirelessly to my Time Capsule. Somewhere else I saw that it is a Time Machine/Time Capsule/iMac issue. Time Machine and Time Capsule work fine with my MacBook. Anybody out there found the solution for this??? Is it in fact an iMac issue???
I am also have this same problem. Every time I try to run a backup on my MacBook using TIme Machine my computer locks up completely. I get this message saying "Mac OSX has quit unexpectedly" and it forces me to do a hard restart. I have no idea what to do.
no idea, but, i have connect an external WD500 Mybook, and using it to make the TM backup, it run perfectly.....but if i try tu use TC for backup everything freeze......
We've been running the Time Capsule since May and up till a few days ago, it worked fine. Now I get the same panic grey curtain and total reboot needed.
I called support, but my complimentary phone support had just run out.
I also need a solution as the TC now seems like a lot of money for dead space. My OS is 10.5.4 too
APPLE - PLEASE SORT THIS OUT! EVERYTHING WAS COOL TILL YOU BROKE MY TIME CAPSULE!
yesterday afternoon a friend of mine try him TM with him macbook 10.5.4, without sec uodate 2008-05: same identically thing, him macbook freeze.
help us please!
Had the same problem and backtracked my activities. Found the culprit to be my anti-virus software (Mcafee Virus Scan for MAC). I unchecked the On-demand Scan option (default). TM does not freeze up anymore. Works like a charm now.
How could your phone support runout? The TC is less than a year old. I got my TC in March, got phone support about 2 weeks ago, and my replacement TC is in the mail to me now.
On that note, I took my TC to an Apple service provider, as instructed by the phone support, and they determined it was not functioning properly. I wasn't able to get a specific description to the problem, but Apple is hooking me up - no charge.
i d't use antivirus, the only third part software running are BOINC (seti) and cronosync, but this programa was installed in april, and the problem with TM - TC started in august, after 10.5.4 and sec up 2008-05
i think in some bug in these update.
the phone support tell me to send the TC in apple qualify laboratory, but i my opinion is't a problem of time machine:
file trasfert run
emc2 retrospect run
deja-vu run
cronosync run
the only stupid software that freeze and crash everything is time machine!!!!
it's impossible that the TC is damaged, and the test was made with my 3 apple and 1 of a friend of mine, and for all of these 4 apple the result was the same: time capsule forever in "preparing backup", finder freeze, control setting unable to open, network (wired and wireless) jammed, time capsule out of network.
