Error 2330 while installing itunes or quicktime

I've been unable to open my itunes and when I try to repair or even remove itunes from my computer I am given an error code (2330) and then it will just close. I've also tried to download quicktime and itunes over my existing program but always get the same error. Any help would be great, thanks.

toshiba laptop, Windows XP

2330s are usually caused by damaged program files.

Try running a chkdsk over your C drive (or whichever drive your program files are stored on):

How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP

Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, does iTunes launch again? If not, are you at least able to uninstall and reinstall iTunes?

I ran my check disk in read-only and it found and corrected damage. However now when I go to open itunes it says my file "C" is not a valid installation package for the product itunes. and also says to find the installation package "itunes.msi" in a folder from which you can install itunes. The two C: locations that are available for me give me that message and I don't know what to "browse". Also when I try to reinstall I am given that message. Any more ideas? thanks

Oddly enough, I think that means we've already made some progress. It sounds like iTunes is trying to repair itself now (when you launch it), but that there's also been some damage to the iTunes installation configuration information (which is causing the missing .msi message, and thwarting the repair install).

So let's try the following procedure now.

First, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. If it goes, good. If it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to iTunes.

Next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Now launch Windows Installer CleanUp ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"), find any iTunes and/or QuickTime entries in the list of programs in CleanUp, select those entries, and click “remove”.

Next, we'll manually remove any leftover iTunes or QuickTime program files:

(1) Open Local Disk (C:) in Computer or whichever disk programs are installed on.

(2) Open the Program Files folder.

(3) Right-click the iTunes folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion.

(4) Right-click the QuickTime folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. (Note: This folder may have already been deleted if QuickTime was successfully removed using Add/Remove Programs earlier.)

(5) Delete the QuickTime and QuicktimeVR files located in the C:\Windows\system32\ folder. Click Continue if Windows needs confirmation or permission to continue. (Note: These files may have already been deleted if QuickTime was successfully removed using Add/Remove Programs earlier.)

(6) Right-click on the Recycle Bin and on the shortcut menu, click Empty Recycle Bin.

(7) Restart your computer.

Now try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly now? If so, does it launch properly sfterwards?

Thank you very much for all your help, I got quicktime and itunes back up. Would you have any ideas as to why itunes would do that? I perform maintenance on my computer frequently (defrags, disk clean-up, etc.) My only thought is I use an external hard drive for my songs so they won't slow down my laptop, maybe a problem was created with that. But anyways thanks again.

🙂 Excellent news.

That's a good policy. Judging from the results of the chkdsk (and historical precedent with reports here with 2330s on iTunes and QuickTime installs), I'm thnking that some damage to the disk caused the problems here.

That could well have been a transient thing (and you were unlucky enough to have it catch some program and installation files that iTunes was using, rather than blank space). But it would be a good idea to make sure your data backups are up to date and it might pay to run a chkdsk again in a few days, just to check to see if any new damage has appeared. (Basically, a precautionary move just on the off-chance that this might be the first sign of an evolving disk issue.)
