Where is Stuffit Engine?

When I downloaded OS 10.2.8 did I get Stuffit Engine 8 along with it, or do I have to purchase the Stuffit 8 package? I can't get Windows Media without it...

iMac, Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I have tried to successfully download Stuffit 8 for days now, even wrote to their technical assistance department, but while I am able to download it I cannot install it. It won't install unless I enter a regisration number first. If I try to use the program I get this message: "Sorry, Expander requires Stuffit Engine 8.0.0 or later. Please reinstall from the original installer." Sounds like I may need to buy a Stuffit 8 package.

It shouldn't have to come to that.

By the way, why do you need Stuffit to view Windows Media? StuffIt decompresses various formats, but is not a video playback utility. When I want to view Windows Media, I use Flip4Mac or the Perian plug-in for QuickTime, both free. I just want to make sure that you're not trying to do 2 wrong things for the wrong reason. Something's not adding up here.

Bravo!! You are better than Stuffit's own technical support staff. I evidently WAS trying to install a paid version. Went back to Google and kept looking for Stuffit downloads and finally found one that was appropriate. When I downloaded this one it did NOT ask for a registration number, just the usual Administrative name and password. Thanks a million.

I needed Stuffit to decompress the Windows Media Player installer before I could use the installer. I say "needed" because I finally got the right Stuffit 8 and was able to install Windows Media Player successfully. The problem apparently was I was trying to download a paid version of Stuffit, though there was no warning or notice of that anywhere. Once I found the right version --not easy--I installed the Stuffit 8 package and was then able to install Windows Media.

By the way, I don't think I can use Flipformac with my 10.2.8 operating system.

Thanks for all your input and for taking the time to help me.

Oh, I totally understand now. Yes, I also used Windows Media Player back in 10.2.8. That's what I get for poking my head in the "Mac OS X v10.3 & earlier" forum and not paying attention to how things worked in those versions.

Glad you got it sorted out.
