delete vs. trash

delete vs. trash

I'm new to mac mail so forgive me if this is elementary.

When I'm finished reading an email that has been downloaded, I'm clicking "delete". I was assuming that by doing this, it would be moved to the trash, but I don't think it is.

Should I be selecting "move to trash" and if so, is there a shortcut to do this on the keyboard?

Mail messages only get moved to Mail’s Trash, not to the Finder Trash. Clicking on the Delete icon, selecting Move to Trash from the Message menu, or using the keyboard combination Command-delete-key, all move the message to the Mail Trash, but does not delete them.

To delete the messages, select Erase Deleted Messages from the Mailbox menu, or Command-K to erase deleted messages In All Accounts.

Thanks for your reply.

In mail preferences under accounts, I'm not sure if I should check "move deleted items to separate folder." I've checked and unchecked it, and what it seems to do is either put a trash folder under "mailboxes" or put a "deleted items" folder under "on my mac". Not sure which way to go.

The deleted mailbox is a folder on the server, the on my mac is on your local hard drive. If you want to see the deleted messages on another computer using .Mac then move them to the deleted mailbox. If not use the on my mac trash. If you want to erase deleted messages on either of those, select it from the Erase Deleted Messages under the Mailbox menu. If you want to erase all deleted messages from both trash cans, select In All Accounts or use Command-K.

One other question on a diff topic if you don't mind.

We have a form on our website where people send us mail and they enter their email address in.

Now that I'm getting these mails on the mac, I'm finding that the reply-to address is showing 3 times xxx@mail.com> <xxx@mail.com <xxx@mail.com>

I'm sure it's only being sent once and if I copy that entire line and paste it elsewhere it only shows once, but was just wondering why it's doing that.

I now have it set so that the deleted messages folder is on "my mac" but when I'm deleting messages they are not going in there... I can't see where they are going.

When I had it set to put them in the trash, they were all going in there.

What am I doing wrong?

What is your setting for Permanently erase deleted messages when:? If it is set for When quitting Mail, they will be removed when you quit. Otherwise, they should be in one of the trash cans in the sidebar window in Mail.

Where did you set Mail to “move deleted messages to a separate folder”?

Are your deleted messages in that “separate folder”?

Thanks so much Bruce... I really appreciate your help.

I posted a question regarding monitors elsewhere but no replies... could you take a stab at it?

I was using a monitor with my pc and with my mac book they gave me an adapter. When I try to use with with the mac, on the monitor all I see is the desktop wallpaper I have, but nothing else from the mac. Any suggestions?

In System Preferences select the Display pane, Display tab. Click on Detect Displays.

Also, although I don’t have a second monitor currently connected, I have previously and as I recall, when your computer detects another monitor, it has buttons for Mirror, or something like that. Try those buttons.

ok thanks... I did check that out and i guess if i dont click mirror it will allow me to have different settings on the laptop monitor and the larger screen?

I think that is correct, as I recall. You can also have different apps open on each screen, just drag the window to the external monitor. You’ll still need to use the menus on the MBP though.
