Can't unmount ipod?

I have a classic ipod and during play it froze. I tried to restart by using menu and center buttons. The apple logo comes up, the ipod then shuts off, and the logo comes back on. This doesnt stop. I finally got it into disk mode by using center and left (rewind) buttons. Attempted to restore in itunes, everything seemed to go fine until the very end of restore when I got the message "cant restore ipod because ipod cant be unmounted". Can someone help?

iMac 24", Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You may have a corrupted preference file. You can test it by removing it from User>Library>Preferences and restarting iTunes. It's the com.apple.itunes.plist file (or something like that I'm not at my Mac) If no change put it back. Try removing the cache files in case of corruption there - use ONYX or some other to do this. You could also run DiskWarrior on the iPod itself. I do this from time to time anyway a it's good for the directory to be repaired now and again.
