How do you cut out a part of an audio recording?

In the arange window select the scissors and cut the beginning of the region that you want to remove; then cut at the end.

Select the new cut reason and delete it.

Don't click and drag, just click where you want the cut to be. Then select the unwanted part and press delete or backspace. Alternatively use the eraser tool to delete the unwanted section.

This is a non-destructive edit. You can change the exact position of your edit afterwards by altering the length of the region. All of this is in the early part of the manual in the arrange window section.

It's crucial to understand the difference between destructive and no destructive editing. Anything you do in the arrange window is non-destructive and can be undone or altered again. Double clicking the region opens the sample editor, which edits destructively - ie. it permanently alters your audio file, though you can create back ups.
