SMB - Windows Domain Users Cannot Change Passwords

Anyone heard of this:

Windows domain users can login to the SMB domain on our X-Serve just fine. However, when one goes to change their password, it says "The system cannot change your password now because the domain XXXXX is not available".

If you have heard of this, what can be done to fix this problem?

X-Serve, Mac OS X (10.5.2), Macbook

Maybe it is not the same issue but I had a similar problem - Win users were unable to change password. It was caused by myself disabling some older authentication schemes in the Open Directory settings, if I remember it correctly. There are 3 of them and I disabled the 2ns and the 3rd I believe. But it appears that password changing uses them so they are needed. The problem does not go away by enabling them again because those authentications are dependent on a password digest. Once you disable a scheme, the digest is also deleted. So, after enabling the authentication again you need to reset the password for each user who uses Windows so that in the future they can change their passwords from their PCs.
