DVD Player Region Restrictions

Is there a way to watch Region 1 and 2 DVD's with the DVD player without the restrictions? I have American and European DVD's and I want to watch them, at will. I only have one more opportunity to change the region setting before I restricted. Surly with such a sophisticated computer this can be done and why the need for restriction?

I haven't tried it personally (I don't have any non-Region 1 DVDs) but I believe VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) will play DVDs without requiring a region change in the DVD player.

For about $30.00 you can get a second DVD drive, such as the Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-115D. Set one drive to region 1, the other to region 2. It is possible to flash the Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-115D to RPC-1, which allows unlimited region changing, but the region changing is a bit messier with Leopard.

With many DVD drives, you can play DVDs of any region, without having to change the drive's region, with VLC

If you want to play them with Apple's DVD Player, install FairMount, after installing VLC.
