Can't disable application startup. Not in sys prefs!

Hi all, I've tried to find this but can't find it anywhere in the forums. I have an obscure mini-app (called Walk-and-talk) that auto starts upon login/startup. It DOES NOT appear in the startup menu in my sys prefs/user account. I use this app once every 2 months. I DO NOT want the thing in the menu bar (which is where it appears) or even sucking a remote amount of cpu/memory. Some of it's files appear in a few startup folders in my user account but it gets complicated (for me) and when I try to delete those files they seem to just reappear again. There are no preferences in the app that help me and no info about it in the user manuals. Any help for me on how to get this thing to only start when I click on the app??

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.11), 2.16 gz, 3GB memory

Hello studioduck,

"I DO NOT want the thing in the menu bar (which is where it appears)"

You can command + click on the icon and drag it off the menu bar.

If this app does not appear in your User Accounts startup items list does it appear in System Preferences under the "Other" section? In other words does it have it's own preference pane?

If you could post a link to the applications website/download it might help others to troubleshoot the problem for you. I googled walk-and-talk application and couldn't find anything resembling what you are describing.

TechTool Pro will have background processes running, and it seems the only way to turn it off is... uninstall.

Never could find where it was hiding anything though it has some in
/Library/Application Support

You might try putting the program on a disk image (r/w) and see if that works, extreme, but might want to.

3rd party should be in top level /Library and not in Apple-only (I think) /System/Library/Startupitems

... but could be wrong, again.

I can manually quit the app and get it off the menu bar, it's just that it appears again upon restart/login, which is what I'm trying to avoid.

It is not in the system prefs at all (particularly not under the "other" section).

This is the site that makes the software:

Here is the download page:

They make interactive white boards tied to software/computers via usb, you can draw on the boards in different colors and then print out what you wrote on the whiteboard. Only problem is, I don't use it that often.

Have you checked:
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Users/yourhome/Library/LaunchAgents?

You could also check:
/System/Library/LaunchAgents
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons
but be very careful before deleting anything here - especially anything in the second folder as many of these control essential system services and you could render you Mac unbootable, I believe.

I've had this almost this exact problem. It was with SMART Board software, which does the same thing.
Eventually I got fed up with it and decided to stop it once and for all.
1. "SMARTBoard Service" kept getting launched at startup, so I found that in the Finder.
2. I opened terminal, entered the following line, and pressed the return key:
cd "/Applications/SMART Board Software/"
3. I entered the following line and pressed the return key:
sudo chmod a-x "SMARTBoard Service"
4. I was asked for an admin password, and, being an administrator, I entered my password.

This made "SMARTBoard Service" unable to be executed.

I think that this will work for you.

adsfushi72 or anyone else, would that still allow me to open the application when
I need to?

It depends. If there is an application/script within the application which is solely responsible for auto start up, say, you could disable that and still start the application. Otherwise, disabling the application will disable it altogether.

What the commands above do is disable the "execute bit" for all users on "/Applications/SMART Board Software/SMARTBoard Service". I don't know what the equivalent would be for your application or what the effect of doing this would be. Essentially, though, having done this, "/Applications/SMART Board Software/SMARTBoard Service" cannot be launched. Whether that prevents "/Applications/SMART Board Software" from being launched depends on the details.

You can always re-enable the "execute bit" but that would obviously require a similar operation in reverse every time you wanted to enable it and a repeat operation to disable it afterwards.

Actually, Smart Board Software is a folder that has the software in it.
Yes, you need follow the above instructions, substituting a+x for a-x, to enable you to use it again.
If you use the program often, this solution might not be for you. Still, I think it feels good to keep that pesky program from wasting precious processor time, and I can always re-enable it if I need to.
