I have a Blue and White G3 with OS 9.2.2. It has 6GB hard drive. 448 memory and 350 mhz Built in USB and FireWire. What version OS 10 am I able to install and can I keep the OS 9.2.2 I can have 3gb plus free if necessary. Anything special I need to know before I install. Jenean

Tiger (10.4.x) is the last supported version of OS X for that model. However, you do not have a large enough hard drive. OS X requires at least 8-10 GBs of free space on a hard drive. Tiger requires upwards of 6 GBs to install.

If you put in a larger drive then you could install OS X. You would not have to remove OS 9. However, you would need to get OS X compatible versions of software because OS 9 versions will not work in OS X natively.

Frankly, you should stick with what you have. If you really need to use OS X then I would buy a later model Mac that was designed for use with OS X - something made after 2002-3.

Many would say that you should try to at least go for 10.3, and certainly not below 10.2

According to the specs for Panther your RAM is okay but most would say you should up it to 500+ at least. Your hard drive is on the small side. Panther really needs 3 GB but with keeping OS9 and your other files that doesn't leave you room for anything else.

A G3 B&W could potentially be an issue. Rev. 1 models didn't like having things changed in them, especially the hard drive if you tried putting in a larger one as you might want to do.

The B&W requires a firmware upgrade before installing OSX, if not already done.

Jenean:

To comfirm what has already been noted by Kappy and Limnos:
• You B/W will support up to Tiger (10.4.11) if it, otherwise, meets the minimum system requirements for Tiger.
• Your HDD is too small to accommodate OS X and much else.
• Your slower 350 MHz processor will likely give less than optimal performance.

If you are willing to go ahead and install a new (larger) HDD and make sure your computer otherwise meets the minimum specs, will be able to install and run up to Tiger. However, I'm with Kappy's suggestion that you look at a later Mac.

Good luck.
