Isn't unlimited data included in your plan? In which case there's no reduction to be had - or am I missing something?

The data plan allows you to do a lot more than just browse the web. It gives you visual voicemail, 200 text messages, email, weather & stock updates, etc.

As the other said, you agreed to a 2yr contract knowing data plan is required. Also Edge isn't all that slow. It is faster than dial up on average. I check maps, browse web, get email, etc all the time on Edge. No issues. Yes I like being on WiFi more, but come on, it is a mobile device and you get unlimited anywhere. What is the point without the data plan? And you have to have it as Voice Mail only works over Edge, not WiFi.

While voicemail, and Yahoo Push are the two things that specifically require EDGE, without a Data plan the charges for them could add up quickly.

No, this is not what the unlimited data plan for the iPhone means.

at&t's unlimited data plan for the iPhone is truly unlimited with their network - or all over the U.S. where at&t has coverage - which is extensive.

Yes you can cancel the Data portion of your plan, I just did it a couple of weeks ago.
The contract you signed was to remain an AT&T customer for two years, not keep extras like data plans on your account (according to an AT&T rep, who at first told me I could cancel the data plan ,but would have to switch to using another phone.) It took four calls before I got someone that just said sure you can cancel the data and continue to use the iPhone, however you will lose Edge , Text messaging and visual voice mail. The only thing I miss is the Visual Voicemail, but I never used the other two features so I'm doing just fine without. You can still connect to any wifi hotspots and get online. So my advice is if you first get a no, keep calling until you get a yes.

You can cancel the data PLAN, but be sure you cancel data ACCESS also, or it will continue using EDGE at a per kilobyte rate of 0.019 cents/KB or $19/MB. As others have said you will lose some features of the phone if you cancel.

Yep, I cancelled my data plan, as well. I cancelled mine about 6 months ago, without any issues. Saves me $20 / month 🙂.

I really don't understand why anyone would have an iPhone without the data plan. Why not just get an iPod Touch?

so when canceling the data on the 3g iphone, you simply call a customer rep, tell them you no longer want data and it's done?

I don't want data but I was told when I upgrade for a 2 year contract I can only get rid of the data plan if I don't have the iphone anymore
