ftp Transmit

I made a website using iweb, got our own domain name through register.com. Our iweb website is uploading slowly, so someone told us to use the FTP uploading program Transmit - they are asking for the server name , user name, password, internal path, port, and protocol - how do I know what to input for these categories - where do I find my server name - is that through Mac, register.com, etc...I am lost and need help to figure out how to upload my site using Transmit. Thanks so much!!

Mac Desktop 20', Mac OS X (10.5.2), iweb, transmit, server name

If you want to upload your pages directly to your domain space, then you use ftp. All you need to enter in the ftp program is ftp name, username and password. This is all provided by your domain hosting/registering company. If you want to upload, then normally you would need a hosting package to be able to do this.

These details have nothing to do with .Mac as you are not using .Mac to publish - just the site with iWeb. Contact register.com to obtain these details.

Try using Cyberduck, which might be easier than Transmit.

You get it from the ISP who is supplying your web hosting - it may be regisiter.com (I assume that they offer hosting packages) or through a different web hosting company - who are you paying to host your web site?

Using transmit seems to me to be the easiest thing in the world - log into you FTP site and point to the destination library there - point the left hand window to your source directory on your Mac and drag the files you want uploaded from the left hand window to the right hand window

I really like Transmit (although I like Fetch and cute FTP too 🙂 )

It might help if you told us exactly what you are trying to do. Could you be more specific?

What exactly does "I got into transmit and moved the folders, but it is still not publishing my site to the web" mean?

You need to enter your username and password and ftp name in Transmit to be able to connect with your domain space through your web hosting company, which as has already been stated, may be different companies to your domain registrar, if they don't provide hosting packages too.

Anyway, when you connect to your domain in Transmit, you should find a public folder there and you then need to upload your iWeb folders including the index.html file to your domain space. I have never used Transmit, but in Cyberduck you click on an upload button and it starts uploading all your files. The folder I am referring to are your site folders from iWeb, when you click on publish to a folder.

Do you have a .Mac account? If so, do you realise that .Mac does not use ftp to publish? So if you are trying to achieve this then it will not work and inside iWeb, this is what the publish to .Mac or publish all to .Mac options are all about.

Hi kjardini,

Just wondering if you have figured out what to enter in the SERVER field of the Transmit (and also username and password).

Initially, I thought it would actually be the ISP details, as pointed out by some of the guys here, but then I figured it couldn't be that. It should be the Mac Server that we are trying to publish out iWeb sites onto.

Please let me know if you can help.

Best,

I really don't understand why you are or would want to use an ftp client to upload your site to MobileMe? You don't need to. From inside iWeb all you need to do is click on Publish or Publish All to MobileMe and your site will be published to your MMe account and your iDisk. That is the whole point of using iWeb and MobileMe - the one click publishing.
