Less RAM?

I just got my macbook pro, and I really love it! It's supposed to have 4 gigs of RAM, but diagnostics programs tell me it only has three. Is this common or is there something wrong?

If the system diagnostics say you only have 3GB of RAM then that's probably what you have. It's pretty easy to get to the memory to take a look at it. Some are marked with their capacity. You could at least see if the 2 are identical--4GB is generally made up of 2 x 2GB modules.

Check in System Profiler - it should tell you what RAM modules you have. Did you get the MBP as new, or could it be an older model? On early MBP models there was a limit resulting from the chipset limitations and putting two 2GB modules would give you only 3GB visible for the system. Only newer MBPs (2008 and later) can use the whole 4GB.
