recording vocals with a sound booth

Hey guys and gals . I just got LE7 couple weeks ago . Until then i was playing with garage band and really enjoying its abilities.I now have a sound proof booth that I constructed myself . My issue is that in garage band there is a clear difference between audio input and output . For example when my Mc is in the sound booth i would put audio output to built in audio and then i ran a cord from my computers 1/8th in headphone jack to my booths headphones . My output was to my firewire solo with my mic . So when i press record my Mc could hear the track on Garage band in his headphones and i could record his vocals .In LE7 there appears to be only a built in all or firewire solo all no spit in the audio drivers pull down . does anyone have a suggestion or an answer for me i would greatly appretiate it..

I know i just posted last night but this is the only thing holding our camp back from recording bliss 🙂 . Ive been reading the past posts and maybe this is only an option in pro?? ......this was the only reason I bought express instead of cubase was for the ease of use and i didnt need all the video stuff that pro has . So is my problem the same as in the i cant hear my guitar post . Only in pro can you split audio functionality? This seems like such a simple and needed isolation booth tool for express not to have some route around it plus ive read others with sound booths recording as well so how did you guys do it ? Any help from anyone already doing this or pros would make my month . Thanx for being here to help all - Benny B

I can manage this succesfully with my MOTU 828MkII.

I take it what you are trying to achieve is to record the vocal track, and the singer can hear the backing track while he's doing so.

To achieve this I plug the headphones into the MOTU. What you want to do is check the AudioSetup in Utilities. Make sure the input or output is what you want it to be. Here you can choose if the sound output is through your interface or the Mac line out.

In Logic also make sure the backing tracks arent muted and are going to the correct output channels.

Hope this helps.

Why don't you run the headphones output from the Solo to your booth, and turn software monitoring ON in Logic's audio preferences?

Also, if you're using Tiger, you can create an Aggregate Audio Device (this combines the ins/outs of your Solo and built-in audio into one device). Open Audio/MIDI Set Up in your Utlities folder, click Audio Devices, go to Open Aggregate Device Editor from the Audio menu (menubar) and add both your devices. That should do it. Then in Logic select your new aggregate device.

Thanx alot good peoples . I did indeed try in utilities to set my firewire as my input and my out as built in audio. But logic still prevented this from making a difference. in the individual tracks under input output there is no built in audio . or maybe im missing it someware or not routing the bus or input right or something ? this was so easy in garage band ! I did also try to use my output on my firewire solo and set the software monitoring and this does work but im forced then to remove my monitor speaker wires from the back of my firewire solo everytime i want to record as to not pick up the speakers on the audio track .So this is a solution but not a practical one for what in trying to do . This is such a needed tool for recording with a booth i cant imagine that there is not a solution in such a wonderful recording suit as logic i must be totally dummying out right now ive figured everything else but this is still stumping me . You know much love to those who gave input .thanx a bunch are there any other solutions out there !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Set the Firewire as both in and out, but dont use software monitoring.

Plug the mic into the interface

Choose Audio track 1 in Logic

Select Input 1 on the channel strip

Select Output 1 (or 1-2) in the output

In the mixer window, make sure the output 1-2 is set around 0db (its the far right slider)

Select Record

Plug headphones into the audio interface - if it acts as a thru you should hear the signal when the mic is used

Go for it

Either tht or turn your speakers down whilst recording. Having said that, if your vocal booth is totally isololated, the speaker volume should not spill into the mic signal.

Hope this helps.

Hey Drew hows the weather in london ! Its 70 and sunny here in Arizona 🙂 ahhhhh palm trees and swimmin pools . Hey man i tried exactly as you instructed and it does indeed work save for my speaker volume and my headphone volume are the same level adjuster and my vocal booth isnt exactly sound proof its about 15 feet in front of me and does leek some external sound . Thats why in garage band it was a perfect setting in the audio settings to be able to choose in and outs . im thinking maybe recording into garage band then transfering to logic for final mixing will i loose any quality in vocal takes do you know ? or do you have maybe another solution .Thanx for the thought full posts dudes i do appretiate the brotherly love out here in phoenix - peace

Cool. Its cold here but theres a few fireworks lighting up the night sky. Sounds lush where you are!

The spoecs for the Firewire solo I can find on the net state 'level control for headphone and analog outs' - is this the same dial on the front that controls both? Hmm.

If it is, I would suggest sacrificing the monitors during the recording. The other option is to buy a headphone splitter and monitor through headphones. After all, during recording, your only likely to be listening for clipping overall (which the peak meters should show you) and not 'riding the gain' as you go.

Set the levels, kill the monitors, away you go. Its not ideal, but creative times call for creative thinking!
