Moving abroad---Can I take AT&T iphone?

I'm debating about getting an iphone in the next few weeks and signing up with AT&T for phone service, but in a little over a year (summer 2009) there is a good chance I'll move out of the country (probably to France). Is it possible to take an iphone which has been signed up with AT&T, cancel the AT&T service, sign up with Orange in France, and use the same iphone?

This won't work, as the iPhone is carrier-locked to the carrier in the country it was bought. I have heard that AT&T will allow you to cancel your contract without penalty if you leave the country, but call them and ask. However, the iPhone cannot be switched to Orange without hacking it. Best to sell it here and buy one in France.
