AC Power Adapter

I just bought an 80Gig iPod classic to replace an old iPod that finally bit the dust. As you know, the new iPod comes with a USB cable that connects to the dock connection slot on the bottom. I didn't buy the USB power adapter as yet.
Here's the question: can I use the old power adapter and connecting cord from the old iPod? It has a similar dock connector, but it goes to a Firewire connector on the other end which then plugs into the AC power block. The AC power adapter has the following written on it: "Apple iPod Power Adapter. Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China. Model No. A1003. AC INPUT 0.4A Max. PSCV120101A © 2001." Also: "Input: AC 100-240V. 50/60 Hz 26-38VA, Output: 12V 1.0A"
So...is the dock connector on the old cable compatible? is the old power adapter compatible? How about the old dock?

By the way, the Apple Store gave me a 10% discount on the new iPod when I handed them the old one to recycle. Nice!!

I'd like to add a question to the list: how about the old cable with the new dock?

Should I be able to plug the old AC adapter (that came with a 40GB iPod in 2004) into the NEW universal dock and charge the NEW iPod Classic?

I've seen lots of posts in lots of places that say their Classics aren't charging on the new universal docks when they're plugged into an AC outlet (and not a computer).

Is it possible that the old AC adapter will work for everything except connecting to the new dock and charging the Classic? Is there a specific cable required if you want to charge your iPod while it's on the dock?

It has been suggested in a few of the posts that there is a problem with the docks. Zelidar says you just need the right cable. Jeff Bryan says the old cable works fine. I don't know what to do.

I tried to plug my old AC adapter into my new iPod universal dock, and it would not charge either of my iPods. The old AC adapter plugged into the old (not universal) dock charges them both.

I would really appreciate any pointers here. Too many variables, not enough facts. Thank you!
