"New Movie Recording" gives me a black screen when External camera used

I am using QuickTime Pro on a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.5.3 installed. When I launch QT and click on File --> New Movie Recording, the video window pops up, but the screen is black.

I am trying to use an external Sony HD camcorder with it. The camera is selected in the preferences, but all I ever get is a black screen. If I hit record anyways, then hit stop, an error comes up saying that additional software is needed to play back the video. Playing back as-is just gives me a white screen.

The computer is recognizing the camera just fine, and I have it set to record in it's native format straight to my desktop.

Anhy clues as to why it won't work?
