Cool stuff you can do on a mac?

Okay, so I've discovered that even some computer savvy people can get freaked out when average and available computer technology is used to do unexpected things. For example, using "screen sharing" to wirelessly remote control a mac connected to a projector. The onlooker thinks you're projecting from your MacBook -- but it's not connected to anything.

Has anyone else here done something a little different only to look back and say, hey, that was kind of special?

I have an old PowerBook ("Pismo") that I don't use as my main Mac these days. When my Airport Express (original version) died recently, I set up the PowerBook as a +wireless node+ next to my TiVo in the living room. It lets my TiVo access the network and connect to the Internet using the PowerBook's Ethernet port and Internet Sharing feature.

I thought that was pretty cool by itself, but then I installed +TiVoDecode Manager+ on the PowerBook and was able to access the TiVo and convert selected programs on the TiVo to QuickTime format, which I save to access from my other Mac using iTunes.

Then I decided to connect the PowerBook's stereo output to the sound system in the living room (and use iTunes), and the S-Video output to the TV (and use DVD Player). By using the +Screen Sharing+ features and VNC, I can remote control the PowerBook from my other Mac.

So because my Airport Express broke, I ended up re-purposing my old Mac and getting a more functional setup to replace the Airport Express.

Yeah, Tom, I'll give you the "everything you do on a mac is cool." But, there's the humdrum "typing a word document" that won't get you any raised eyebrows.

But, talking to your mac, and having it respond in spoken english will earn you a double-take. Unfortunately, most people don't believe you're actually talking to your computer, and it's doing something based on your voice request. But, it's still fun to have to explain, "No, really!"

the cool thing is- you don't ever need a nerd (do they still have ponytails?) to come and fix your computer and make it work again (and programme in some glitches so that he'll have to come back again later and earn even more ridiculous money).

PS users always seem to need "the computer guy". The cool thing about a Mac is, you don't.

When things get really problematic, I just come here and someone always has the answer.
