Rename Print tray

I need help editing PPDs. Basically I want to rename a printer tray from "Tray 1" to "Use This Tray" in the print dialog. In order to do so, I need to edit the ppd file located at library/printers/ppds/contents/resources, yet I have no idea what to edit once I open the ppd file in a text editor of my choice. Can someone tell me exactly what to edit to change the tray name?

I found some resources, yet none about my specific question. I just need to know exactly where to look inside the PPD file to change the settings.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,

It's been a long time since I've looked at PPD files.
First, I wasn't sure if they were in my ~/Library or /Library directory. I found them only in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/.

The files in that directory are all .gz files.
I have an HP Laserjet 3300, so I'll use that as an example.
First, make a copy of the file named after your printer model. Keep that file in a safe place in case you need to restore.

Next, right-click (control-click) the file with the name "HP Laserjet 3300.gz" and select Open With -> Archive Utility. The "gz" extension is gzip, so you need to unzip ("gunzip" in the case of gzip) the file before editing.

The resulting file is the PPD file, with the same name as the .gz file, but there's no extension.

Double click that new file. It should open in your default text editor, or in Text Edit. Mine opened in Text Edit.

I searched for "tray" and found a line like this:
*InputSlot Upper/Tray 1: "<</ManualFeed false /MediaPosition 0>> setpagedevice"

This is where you'll have to try some things.

Remember to have a backup.

Try to change the text that says "Tray 1" to "Use this tray".

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the info. I believe I actually had to change a variety of items to get it to work. This is how I did it:
1. Under "General Information", I changed the "Product:", "ShortNickName:", and
"*NickName:" to something different, so I can choose the new PPD in the printer driver pull-down menu.
2. I changed the Tray name in 2 places (highlighted in bold):
*SepSource Tray2/ RECYCLE: "<< /SlipSheetDetails << /Type 96 /SlipSheetSource 1 >> >> setpagedevice"
*InputSlot Tray2/ RECYCLE: "
1 dict dup /MediaPosition null put setpagedevice
userdict /lms
currentpagedevice /InputAttributes get 1 known { 1 }{ 0 }ifelse put
currentpagedevice /InputAttributes get lms get setpagedevice
1 dict dup /InputAttributes 1 dict dup /Priority [lms] put put setpagedevice
1 dict dup /Policies 1 dict dup /PageSize 2 put put setpagedevice
<< /ManualFeed false >> setpagedevice"
*End

===================

Thanks for the help.
