I am also having trouble with my voicemail. I already have my voicemail activated and have been using, then on 6/5/08 I no longer can access my voicemail. I touch the voicemail icon and the screen doesn't change. I have not had any luck finding a solution to the problem. I have tried turning my phone off and back on again and resetting phone. Nothing has worked. At the same time I started having problems with the speakers. I can't hear sound when I make a call unless I use speakerphone, headphones, or even bluetooth. I've checked to make sure that I have the volume up loud enough to hear. Please let me know if you find a solution to your voicemail problem.

Try this to activate voicemail. I have been told voicemail can take a few days after you purchase to re-set. If it has been more than 3 days and you still have an issue you can try one or more of the following solutions.

Turn your iphone off, then back on.
Go to the phone tab and then click on the voicemail icon.
if nothing happens, go to the phone and call this phone number:

253-709-4056. This is the ATT # to setup voicemail.
Follow the annoyingly slow directions to setup your voicemail. I was told you need to setup the voicemail first, for it to 1) show up as a working button your iphone and 2) for visual voicemail to work.

Once you set it up following the instructions, hang up.
Go back to your voicemail icon and click it. You should now see a password screen that you will want to put in the same psswd you used in following the instructions in the above procedure.
You should now be set up with voicemail.

If that does not work, here is the customer care # they are forwarding people to:
800-331-0500

Hope that helps and works for everyone.
btw- the 800 is the first line of help and typically not always helpful. Once forwarded to Technical Support from this first line of help, my voicemail problem was fixed.

good luck.

I FINALLY FIGURED OUT HOW TO DO IT!!!
I had the same problem when I bought a new iPhone.
The bigger and more complicated problem is that since it hasn't been activated yet, you can't get to your voicemail the old-fashioned way.
Here's how to do it:

1. Try the simple stuff; restart and reset. (DO NOT RESTORE YET, IT TAKES TOO LONG, AND IT MIGHT BE SOLVED EASILY WITH SOME OTHER STUFF)
2. Call AT&T (800-331-0500). Enter your phone number, press 3, and press 3 again (don't press 1 and 2, they won't help with your problem). Now you have "tricked" them into setting up your voicemail.
3. You will receive a text with your new voicemail password. Access your voicemail the old-fashioned way (preferably from a different phone) to complete the setup. Now at least you have some access to your voicemail.

After setup of your voicemail, try tapping the voicemail tab, it should work. If it doesn't, try restoring your phone. If you are still having problems, I can't help you, but at least you have some way of accessing your voicemail.

the steps you listed weren't exactly right for me, but the basic concept worked like gangbusters.

Call the iPhone FROM the iPhone.
Hit *
Follow Directions
Enter a Password
Follow Directions
Hang Up

3 seconds after hanging up, the iPhone (without me doing anything) asked me for the password ("Incorrect Voicemail Password" or something) and after that, the voicemail button (and all associated features) actually worked.
