Iphone service in South Korea

I am in the military and have been recently assigned to Korea. I got an Iphone the week it came out and used it in the states until Feb 08 when I left for Korea. I am here for 2 years and dont want my Iphone to sit unused. Is there and plans in the near future to get service for my Ipone in South Korea? If I kept my AT&T service it would cost me more money than I make in a month to use it.

Kudos to you for your service in the military.

This is a user to user help forum only, so no one here knows if Apple has plans to sell the iPhone in South Korea in conjunction with a cellular provider there. The list of countries where the iPhone will be available is expected to grow this year and next, but we won't know until Apple makes an official announcement.

Even if Apple sells the iPhone in South Korea at some point, doubtful you will be able to use your iPhone there with a provider that Apple makes a deal with, which was sold in the U.S. as carrier locked with at&t only.

I'm here in Kunsan myself. The ROK does not have any GSM service in the country. Their cell phones all run off CDMA technology. Your best bet is to call AT&T (1-888-444-4410) and put your service on a military hold until you get back to the states. You can still use your iPhone as an iPod/PDA device. It sure helps me keep my schedule straight. Good luck to you in Korea!
