Hi,

I upgraded my hotmail account to the premium membership to be able to use its pop service on my iphone and it worked fine for a few months. But suddenly it just stopped working a couple of weeks ago. I am not able to receive any new emails on the email service of my iPhone for my Hotmail account. All my other email services, yahoo and gmail, work fine on my iPhone apart from my Hotmail account which it just stopped two weeks ago and has not resumed working ever since.

Any one has any explanation or suggestion to resolve this issue.

Thanks

iPhone, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

    Any error message provided?

If not, I suggest deleting and recreating the account on your iPhone. This will lose any received messages that are no longer on the server, and any sent messages with the iPhone's Mail client since this is a POP account.

Nope! No error messages. I did think of deleting and recreating the account but it is such a pain!! Plus I want to fix the problem fundamentally as it might happen again.

    Thanks

I am having the same problem. I just forwarded hotmail to yahoo till someone fixes it. I emailed hotmail and they just gave me the info to that is already in the phone. Its funny how it worked good for a while and then it just quit. It quit one day and I turned the phone off and on and got about twelve emails at one time, the ones I was missing.

Are you accessing any other email accounts besides your Hotmail account with the iPhone's Mail client?

If so, any problems with any other account besides your Hotmail account with the iPhone's Mail client?

If you aren't experiencing any problems with any other account that you are accessing with the iPhone's Mail client, this leans towards the problem being with Microsoft. If deleting and recreating the account on your iPhone does not resolve it, another indication this is a MS problem.

No problems with any other mail, yahoo is pushing and gmail is always 100%. Thanks

I use both Gmail and Yahoo! and they both work fine with my iPhone. It is just Hotmail that stopped working. I deleted and recreated the account but I have a problem! It's started downloading the all the messages from my hotmail account inbox starting from the oldest!!! How do I stop it? I do not want it download any of the old messages on my iPhone. Just the ones that I receive from now on!

    Thanks

You can't stop this because the account is a POP account.

When creating a POP account with a new email client that you've been accessing with another email client - or when re-creating a POP account with an email client such as in this situation, all messages available at the incoming mail server, or that remain at the incoming mail server will be downloaded again.

If you aren't interested in these messages, why are they still available at the incoming mail server?

As with any other email client, the iPhone's Mail client includes a setting to remove/delete messages from the server when downloaded.

And the bright side is - the account is working again.

I am having the same problem and I think I am making matters worse. I tried deleting the hotmail account and then added it again, but I'm not sure I have the settings right. Should I be setting up in IMAP, POP, or Exchange? Here is what I have done so far for my last attempt:

    Deleted my Hotmail account.
Powered phone off and turned back on.
    Went to Settings/Mail/Add Account/Other

    IMAP is highlighted
    Name/Address/Description is correct

    Host Name: pop3.live.com
    User Name: is correct
    Password: is correct

    Host Name: smpt.live.com
    User Name: is correct
    Password: is correct

Pressed SAVE (iphone shows "verifying IMAP account information")
Error message "*Cannot Connect Using SSL* Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?"
Pressed YES (iphone shows "verifying IMAP account information")
Error message "*IMAP account verification failed* The IMAP server "pop3.live.com" is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the "Incoming Mail Server" field."
    Pressed OK

Now what or where do I go from here? My Yahoo account is working fine.

Should I be setting up in IMAP, POP, or Exchange?

The following should answer your question:

    +Host Name: pop3.live.com+

    and

+The IMAP server "pop3.live.com" is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the "Incoming Mail Server" field."+

A paid Hotmail account can be accessed as a POP account only. When the incoming mail server includes pop3, it certainly isn't an IMAP account.

Looks like its going to work now. Just to try to save a little face, I did try it in the POP setting and it didn't work. I must have mis-typed a password or something (and I thought I was careful!)

    Thanks for the help.
