I bought a new MacPro a few months ago that came with iMovie 08. I edited some clips and then discovered that the P.O.S. wouldn't allow exporting the files back to a camcorder DV Mini tape. On another post I was advised that iMovie HD 6 could be downloaded free. I downloaded it. Then I learned that I had to have iLife to make it work.

I spent $86 to buy iLife and installed it. I double clicked on the downloaded file iMovieHD6.dmg -- all I get is an error message that it is not recognized. I re-download it -- same "not recognized" message. ***? There is no readme file, no instructions on how to get HD 6 to work. No nothing.

Above, I get the impression that HD 6 can only be installed if there are no other iMovie applications on the computer. Gee, it would have been nice if Apple had mentioned that on the download page. Are there other brain-dead requirements, too, that they are not mentioning? Since I can't save my iMovie 08 edited clips to a camcorder or other high quality storage I've got to do it all over from scratch once I get HD 6 installed? Catch 22.

So now what do I do besides sending angry messages to Apple?

In that case it came with the entire iLife 8 suite pre-installed - iMovie, iDVD, iTunes, iWeb.

Yes, if you already have iLife 8 you can download iMovie 6.0.4 for free.

Why? Which version?

Wrong.

Thank you, Klaus.

I installed iLife '08. As you can see, I am not particularly tech savvy. Since there was nothing on my computer that said "iLife," I presumed that I didn't have it. I presumed that the various applications, such as Garage Band, that were already on my computer were not full versions (like Photoshop Elements isn't the same as Photoshop CS3) and that iLife provided the full version.

Anyway, I just want iMovie HD 6 to work. When I double-click on the downloaded iMovieHD6.dmg I get the error message "Warning The following images failed to mount iMovieHD6.dmg not recognized" What do I need to do to make iMovie HD 6 function?

I downloaded the HD 6 several more times and finally one was successful. I was able to load it and it seems to work OK. I couldn't directly import clips from 08 into 6 so I exported them from 08 to a folder on the desktop. In 6 I then imported them so now I'll be able to export them to a camcorder DV mini.

I don't know if the quality will be reduced by exporting to the folder then into 6 -- if it does reduce it is there a better way to do it?
