why my pc will not pick up on my ipod

i have a 3rd gen ipod nano and heres my problem when i plug my usb corde up with my computer and my ipod the i pod starts charging but my computer dosent pick up on it any ideas ...

also what i want to do is download the music from my media player and s that possible
