Same problem here with Gmail and also with Picasa. I can't even log in to my account info page. When I enter the UN & password, it just goes back to the sign in screen as if I've done nothing. I don't get any kind of error message. I only noticed this in the last two days even though I did the software update to 10.5.3 last week.
Probably worth posting at Google forums as well.
I have had the same issue and it got really bad today–couldn't access any https site I tried. It just hangs with the blue bar barely through the "https:" part of the URL bar and the status bar saying "connecting…". Here's what helped for me, woudl be interested it if works for anyone else:
1. quit safari
2. open network preferences
3. under the active network connection, select advanced -> proxies -> Configure Proxies "manually"
4. check "secure web proxy (HTTPS)".
5. uncheck same.
6. click OK.
7. click "apply"
8. open safari and try again.
This has worked several times for me, fairly consistently. however it will not work if it is still trying to open the https://website while you switch settings around.
safari 3.1.1 btw.
Didn't work for me. Funny thing is my Gmail bookmark points to https://gmail.com/ does not work, but if I click on a link to that exact address (like from my original post) it does work. ??? Anyway I updated my bookmark to point to https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false& continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F%3Fnsr%3D0%26ui%3Dhtml%26zy%3Dl& bsv=1k96igf4806cy<mpl=default<mplcache=2
And it seems to work. But still if I type https://gmail.com into my addressbar and hit enter, it will not load. That has to be a bug. TIA
