Could not connect to AIM Error - you have attempted to login too often....

when trying to login it tries to login several times then errors out, and then when trying to login the could not connect error message appears and says you have attempted to login too often in a short period of time. I saw the other postings and tried port 443, deleting the plist files but still get this error.

It's strange because we have other macs that work fine using the same wireless router. And this appears from time to time on the other computers also.

We upgraded to 10.5.3

Any help would be greatly appreciated....thanks

I just tried the login id from the computer that isn't working on the good computer and vice versa. It looks like the problem is that the login id must be locked out for some period of time on the server because of the failed attempts earlier because the login id doesn't work on either computer and the good login id works on both computers.

This may be helpful for future reference the only thing is I wonder how long it will take before it resets?

Or maybe there are some settings tied to the user id that are saved on the server that could be causing the problem????

I just upgraded (hah) to a netgear wrg614 v9, and since then, i get the rapid login/logoff then 'you have logged in too many times' error.

Even setting discrete port forwarding for ichat/aim to my machine does nothing. Sounds like the netgear wap was a less than wise purchase. The roommate and I are thinking maybe a different brand of wap since netgear has been all of no help whatsoever.

I have officially given up trying to fix it. after wasting the better part of 2 days, i'll just use yahoo im for the time being.

Ah the future, where stuff still doesn't work.

I would tend to agree with you myself.

It does seem that for whatever reason the 614 series is particularly prone to this.

However I have heard that at v8 and above it seesm to be sorted.

Have you set the DOS/SPI item to Off in the WAN page of the Netgears set up pages ?
Have you allowed it to Respond to Internet Pngs on the same page ?
These tend to be the common settings for Netgears to work.
This has become more important with iChat 4 sending all the A/V data on one port that can sometimes be seen by the DO (Or SPI) as an Internet Attack.

Posted this a while back.

"Got my sister a Netgear 614v9 and works ok on virgin media cable.

UPnP is on(no ports added)
Disable Port Scan and DOS/SPI
Enabled ping"

Also logged in on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.

Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443.
Log back in again.

Yeah, I tried just about everything I could find to fix this issue. It definitely seems like my version 9 just hates more than 2 people on ichat on the same network, or the unit was just plain buggy. Your faq really helped eliminate the things that weren't the cause of this odd behavior.

On the plus side, I now know more about the backend of iChat/AIM than I ever wanted to know, and things like that always come in handy once the next problem pops up.

thanks for all the help, now I can focus on something other than instant messenger.
