Songs have "!" exclamation points before the number.
I recently started having problems with iTunes showing an exclamation point after the number on the list of songs in lets say My Music (actually happens in all playlists). And they won't play. I know the song is there I looked them up. Could the data base be corrupt? Is there a way to rebuild it. Ideas? Suggestions. Thanks in Advance for the help.
The exclamation point simply means that iTunes doesn't find a song where it thinks it is. If you don't care about ratings, last played and all that jazz, you could just delete the entries and reimport the songs into iTunes. It is indeed possible that your library has become corrupt in some way, but this should fix it.
Hope this helps.
Then you most likely moved your music files. Right-click a song and select "Get Info". On there you can see where iTunes thinks the songs are. You can either move them back or delete everything from your library and reimport from the new location where you put your music.
You got it. Select all the songs and hit Delete. That will remove everything from the library, but will not delete the song files (because as you said all of them have exclamation marks next to them, which means iTunes can find the song files).
If any of the songs don't have exclamation marks next to them, iTunes will ask you if you want those files moved to the trash. But if you don't get that message, you know that all of the tunes are "not found" by iTunes. So deleting the entries in the Library won't have any effect on the actual song files.
