Ultra bright overexposed screen

The major problem is that the ultra bright screen is really just overexposed and I am not sure how to fix it. Changing the screen brightness does not change the exposure and does not help. It is difficult to see any text boxes (like on the google home page--you can't see where to type!) So--any help on how to fix the exposure would be great.
