Mysterious missing .mov extension

When I export a quicktime from FCP, I never seem to get the proper ".mov" file extension even though the dialogue box shows it and the progress box shows it. When I navigate to the file location after the export, the ".mov" has vanished. This happens on both my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro, Tiger and Leopard. It's not a big deal except when I forget to add the file extension for my lowly PC user friends. Anybody else having this problem?

No doubt bizarre, and for me it is just FCP and .mov. Yesterday I exported a sequence on my MacBook and of course no file extension was visible, but when I moved it across my network to my MacPro it suddenly showed up. By the way, my MacPro somehow cured itself of the problem. BUT when I recently opened some quicktimes on a windows machine, the extension was gone even though I can see them on the MacPro.

I have a similar problem and I think it is completely messing my finalcut server as well. If I try to export a sequence, I get the runaround with the hide extension checkbox. the filename appears (sequence name by default) with a dot at the end and the Hide extension box off. but if I add mov after the period, then the hide extension checkbox turns itself on and I get the warning that it will add 2 extensions to the end. I can't seem to get out of this cat & mouse game and I really thinking that is why all my compressor jobs on this box are also failing saying that my files are not movies (which of course they are)

Need to do more research on this but if anyone else came across this, I'd love to hear a solution - my research is coming up empty so far...
