Burned CD skips and crackles toward the end

Hello,

I just burned a couple CD's last night and today when listening to them in the car the sound quality toward the end began to get really weird. There were pops and crackles and skipping even when the car wasn't moving. It only happened during the last 4 or 5 songs out of about 11.

It was a mixed CD with songs purchased on iTunes, some downloaded from Limewire and some from imported CD's.

I have searched the forums on this topic but only found a few with this problem and no real solution. Someone mentioned slowing burn speed---what is your suggestion for that 8x? higher? lower?

Should I repair permissions? Upgrade quicktime? (don't really get how quicktime has anything to do with burning audio cds but I'll try anything)

I am on iTunes 4.8.

Hi Lisa

Welcome to the discussions.

It sounds like it was a faulty burn of the CD and your CD player is having trouble reading the CD's.
What blank media are you using? As some of the cheap ones can be problematical, I find Verbatim very good.

Sometimes lowering the burn speed can help, try lowering it to 2 times and see if that works. Otherwise try a different brand of CD blank and see if that works.

You should not need to Repair Permissions or Upgrade QuickTime as it does sound like faulty CD media to me.

The only other thing to watch is that you don't have any Anti-Virus software running.

Lisa, I have experienced the same problem with burn quality in the last half of CD. Are you suggesting the TDK CD-R Music Media from Costco is low quality? They seem to work fine without issue on my Win XPPRO/Itunes setup.

Let's see, low cost media = low cost windows computer. High cost Mac needs high cost media???

I'm willing to try just about anything at this point.

Hello

I spent my entire summer dealing with this problem. I bought my computer the first week of June and finally this past Friday (sept 23), I got the computer I had hoped to have back then. Do not waste your time resetting your computer. Do not waste your time fooling around with itunes settings. Do not waste your time with AppleCare. They will tell you it's your CDs, and IT IS NOT THE PROBLEM. The problem is the superdrive. You have a MATSHITADVD-UJ-845. This is your problem. Get a Pioneer DVD-RW-DVR-KO5. This will solve your problem. I had ticking sounds on about 40 CDS. I called AppleCare and they kept blaming my CDs. Finally another person on this discussion board, Stasia W, who had our problem had her MATSHITADVD replaced with the Pioneer and it worked for her. Now, when I mentioned this to Apple they told me they couldn't do the same for me because of the possibility that someone from Pioneer posted that. A local Apple repair service was kind enough to replace my UJ-845 with the Pioneer for a weekend to see if it worked and sure enough it did. They ordered the part for me and after labor it cost me $320.00. I will be calling Apple to see if they will pay for this since I was under warrenty but my hopes aren't up to high since they didn't authorize the change. As a matter of fact I asked my Apple repair service if this part will still be under warrenty since Apple didn't authorize it and they said "no". I finally have the computer I wanted back in June and it's the end of September. You will hear many suggestions about your problem but I believe this is your only solution. Look up Stasia W's clicking/popping discussion thread for more proof.
