Nate,

The basic TCP/IP components are part of System (7.5.3) 7.5.5. You can choose "classic" networking (the MacTCP control panel active) or Open Transport (the TCP/IP control panel active) via the Network Software Selector (in an Apple Extras folder).

If you have a broadband connection, connect the Ethernet port of the network card (check the type of card; make sure that drivers are installed) to a router.

If you wish to use dial-up instead, a PPP program (such as MacPPP 2.5.3 here) and an external modem will be needed.

You will also need a web browser. For instance, WannaBe or possibly iCab. The text-based WannaBe will be fast on this computer; a normal browser will be very slow. Separately install search plug-ins for WannaBe.

Add a suitable email program. Eudora Light 1.5.5 (e.g., here) can be used, providing that SMTP authentication is not required.

Some of the Macs of this era insist on seeing an Active Ethernet port at Startup, such as a port on a Hub, Switch, or Router. It can be very difficult to get them to talk directly to another computer of the same era without a Hub, Switch, or Router.

One technique that sometimes works is to check what range of Addresses the Router is using, and choose an Address in that range and configure it Manually. Typically, 255.255.255.0 works for a Subnet Mask, and the actual Router Address is entered for Router Address. Your ISP-supplied Domain Name Server (DNS) IP Addresses should also be entered, but the rest may be left blank.

If you get that part working, you can then try setting it to DHCP.

I have a Mac LC III+ with 36 MBs of RAM running Mac OS 7.6.1 too which has a Asante MCiLC PDS ethernet card installed. It also has the optional Motorola 68882 FPU installed on the logic board. I have installed the updated enthusiast Beta 1.0 drivers for the NIC & have upgraded Open Transport to version 1.1.2. I have configured the TCP/IP for DHCP.

I have also installed the TCP/IP Options Control Panel with the option for the lease expiring at shutdown checked. What else should I try to get this old Mac online? I could also add DNRDeleter to the Shutdown Items folder if it becomes necessary too. The Mac LC III+ also keeps getting assigned a 169.154.XXX.XXX IP address too indicating an Open Transport TCP/IP issue.
