Touch vs iPhone (3G)

So because of the fact that I don't want to sign a long contract and wanting to stick with my current carrier I am looking at the Touch. But I have a couple of questions for Touch user...

Besides the phone part, what is the difference between the two?

Since the Touch has WiFi, I can check webbased email?

Does the Touch need a data plan? (sorry that might be a dumb question) I am assuming Wifi will work at home...?

Is there a difference in applications for the Touch.. less apps available?

I guess since there wasnt really a touch announcement its still up in the air, but what is the major differences between the two? thanks in advanced.

1. Yes you can check web based email when you have a wi-fi connection.

2. No data plan. Just access to wi-fi.

3. Right now the only apps that the touch doesn't have are those specific to making phone calls. Also since the touch doesn't have a built in camera, no camera app.

Major differences between the 2 are one is a mobile phone and the other isn't. So like your mobile phone the iphone is always connected. The touch has to be within range of a wi-fi transmitter you have access to. The iphone also has a camera and speakers. The touch has no camera and only has a very basic transducer that makes simple sounds like alerts. No music or ringtones.

There's probably more differences but i can't think of anymore right now 🙂

1) No GPS (biggest downer for me)
2) No camera
3) No volume buttons (might sound trivial, but once you have to unlock the iPod every time you wanna turn down the volume...)

You can watch any webpage you want, including mail but excluding flash at this point. The iPod also has a great email app so you don't have to visit the webpage all the time.
No data plan, just log into any WiFi spot you have the password for (or that is free)
As for the apps, we'll have to see, but other than apps that use the camera or the phone, they should all work on the iPod.
I doubt the touch will dramatically change in the near future, but no one knows.
Hope this helps.

I would gladly have Apple add some thickness to the touch so it could have speakers like the iphone. Sometimes I want to watch I show I recorded with my TVMicro and just don't feel like plugging in the headphones. I don't need perfect audio quality while watching a video.

No speakers is probably the biggest gripe I have about my touch.

As for the speaker, some people complained about the touch not having a speaker, that's all, but indeed, you do not need ringtones (does anybody, really?).

The only reason the iTouch needs a speaker IMHO is so that the alarm clock can actually wake me up or notify me of an appointment. This seems like a glaring omission for a calendar program.

I've got the January update and don't have the SMS that the Iphone has. I think SMS is cell to PC for chat so maybe it wouldn't work anyway. I wonder if Apple will release iChat as an application to purchase from the App Store. I'd pay an additionalo $10 for that.

I'm also looking foward to syncing my corporate email, calendars and contacts. I'm hoping that the MobileMe service which we currently have as .mac will allow syncing of multiple computers for a combined Corporate Email Exchange(Contractor) Corporate Email Exchange (Onsite) and my personal accounts currently being delivered via IMAP.

One inbox via Mail, One calendar source via iCal (with toggle to both work accounts and my personal calendar) and one contact location via Address Book

Games and Chat will be a bonus. I may even consider VoIP with the purchase of a microphone so I can finally get good reception in my house.

July will be an interesting month for me.
