How to create a glowing halo effect?

I imported my clip from the Final Cut timeline to Motion and am now trying to create a glowing halo effect to place over a head. I know how place effects within the clip, but I am just unable to find a glowing halo type effect. It seems like it would be under Particle Emitters but it's not. Any ideas? Also, once I have the effect I want to use, how do I make it stay in one spot without moving with the camera? I tried tracking and stabilizing with no success. Thanks in advance all.

hi,

well you might have to think about building it out of a number of different effects. If it was there pre-made it would be boringly easy!

Try some particle emitter maybe to create the some motion and glow, mask it off into the shape you want, now maybe add some blur and maybe a Rays filter or glow or some such.

I'm not quite sure what yo mean about keeping it in one place, do you mean the footage you want to add it to is not a static shot? If so, the you need to keyframe the position of the halo effect (create the effect in a group/layer of its own so you can key frame the position of the group, that way any changes you make to the halo at a later date will still move around properly). You can do this in a number of ways, you can add a match movemove beahviour to the halo group, and use the footage as the source. Or you can simply record keyframes and move the group around. depends in the footage underneath.

There's a couple of different ways to do it. The easiest by far is to make a circle with the shape tool. Turn off the Fill, Turn on the Outline and adjust to a thickness that you want. Give it a color and then apply the Glow/Bloom filter to it. From there, just adjust the halo in 3d so that it looks how you want it.

As far as "making it stay in one spot"...I assume you are talking about tracking. You said you tried tracking with no success, but you didn't mention HOW you tried it. Tracking will surely give the best results of trying to tie the halo to the clip.

The other way to do the halo involved particle effects. First I created a small circle with the shape tool and hit E to make an emitter out of it. Then I moved the anchor point of the emitter to the perceived "center" of my halo. From the emitter tab, I made the speed 0, and cranked up the birth rate (apprx. 130) and using keyframes rotated the emitter on the z axis. This draws a halo made out of emitted circles. Make sure the life parameter is long enough for your effect. Turn on the 3D button, and add the same Glow/Bloom effect. Now you have a halo that looks 3D. A little more difficult, but 3d vs 2d.
