How do I find the folder size.

Using the finder, I can find a file by size, but how can i find folders of a particular size? I need to clean my hard drive and I'm looking for all folders that are larger than 3GB. Is this possible?

I find that an easy way to do this is to open a Finder window go to the root folder that you want to search (such as your Home), select View -> as List, then View -> Show View Options, and check the Size and Calculate all sizes boxes.

Now you'll see a Size column for all your folders, and if you want you can click the twist-down triangles to "drill-down" to find the actual folders you want to delete.

You can sort by this column, which makes it pretty easy to find the most important ones to attack.

But if you say there's too many, you do it with Terminal:

du -a . | sort -rn

This produces a sorted list of all your folder sizes, sorted by size.

Note that this calculates the size of all your folders recursively, so a folder that contains a big folder will show a big size.

OmniDiskSweeper is a very nice utility for finding where all the storage on your disk is collecting.

In the Finder, you can use

Finder -> File -> Find...

click on the " Kind" pop-up and select " other", then search for " size" and check the box.

Now you can search for " Size" "*Greater Than*".

If you wish to use the Terminal, there is the /usr/bin/find command

find /starting_directory -size +123M

You are making an excellent point. From System 6 (!!!) right up to Mac OSX 10.4, you could do this. The universal function to calculate folder size (as well as set text sizes etc.) was REMOVED from 10.5. An immense oversight some say and surely accidental(???), please feedback Apple on this and let's get it put back in!

You can use (Apple F) from the Finder and make, or save a search that will show you folders by size.
