Can't import any more - unknown error (-50)

I have iTunes 5.0 and right in the middle of importing a CD it stopped with the error message:

Error occurred while converting the file " -song name- ". An unknown error occurred (-50)

I have 6118 songs / 17.97 gigs of music, 11.2 MB library file / 11.1 MB library.xml file. Is this all iTunes can hold? I tried to import a song I had already imported from the same CD and got the same message after checking Replace existing file. I tried restarting iTunes but I haven't rebooted the computer yet.

Hi, try what it said as.
I'm able to import from cds now, just follow what Charlie said. He is Charles Minow level 3, who reply one of my post. You might have to wait more than couple of minutes, but it seems to work. M

"I've seen this workaround posted for some PowerBooks: insert the disc into the computer. Then, let it sit for a while. Eventually, it will spin down. It may take up to a couple of minutes. Then try importing into iTunes.

Tracy--

Can you get your external drive to unmount by using the Disk Utility? If not, you might need to shut the computer down and restart. While it's shut down,

I've read somewhere that error (-50) can be caused by file names that are too long or that have illegal character names in them. Click once on your FireWire drive in the Finder and do a "Get Info" from the Finder's "File" menu. Unless you're also connecting this drive to a PC, the format should be "Mac OS Extended". It might also include "(Journaled)". I don't know what the Finder will say if it's FAT32.

This page, from a drive maker, has more information. (Look at 10 and 11b).

I tried the procedure on the DiskGO Website. NO GO.

The problem is not with iTunes. I can not create any files on this external hard drive with any program. I can not create an "untitled folder" with "shift/command/N". The drive is frozen in limbo. For some reason it thinks it is in use. That's the error message I get when I try to unmount it.

Disk Utillity can not unmount it. Disk Utility cannot verify it.

Disk Warrior can not unmount it. Disk Warrior can not do anything with it.

Which procedure did you try?

Well, you can try opening the Terminal application and typing this:

lsof | grep Volumes

then hitting the "enter" key. That might tell you what file the OS thinks is open. But, obviously, something very funky is going on, so it might not give a file name.

It may be a problem with the FireWire controller, too. Either it's going out or you've reached a limit. Do you have more than 130 or so gigs stored on your external drive? Some drive controllers can't access beyond that amount.

I turned the computer off and un-plugged the hard drive and then turned it off. Then after a few minutes I rebooted and turned on the hard drive. I waited two minutes then re-connected the hard drive. Problem still exists.

I copied and pasted your command into the Terminal and I got the login (?) prompt again. I've never used the Terminal so I'm not familiar with how to use it.

I've only used 86GB out of 250. Get Info says 146GB are available.

Well, that just means that the OS itself isn't showing any files open. If there had been an open file, it should have showed something like this:

QuickTime 7727 charlie 16u VREG 14,4 4090277 18470 /Volumes/diskhame/filename

About all I can think of right now is to perhaps try a different FireWire Cable and/or port on your computer and on the drive. Also, it might be worth a try checking the drive manufacturer's web site to see if there's an update to the drive's firmware.

Unfortunately, beyond that, all I can suggest is to see if you can get your files off that drive and try re-formatting it and see if it's some kind of directory corruption.

I can read the files just fine. They are all iTunes music and iTunes will play them all day long. But I can' t edit anything, like an artist's name. I can't add any more files to the external hard drive. The problem first occured in the middle of ripping a CD. A reboot cured the problem for a few days but it reappeared and won't go away. I am copying the 10,000+ files now in preparation for a re-format.
