Leopard & audio interfaces

I'm looking to buy an audio interface. Has anyone used any of these with Leopard? Are these companies keeping up with OS updates?

AudioFire4 (or other AudioFire)
Onyx Satellite (I'd need a midi interface)
M-Audio Firewire 410

Any other suggestions?
Too bad there isn't something in the range between the Apogee Duet and the Ensemble.

iMac intel duo, Mac OS X (10.5.3), Logic Studio, Yamaha P-80, old DX-7, Mackie analog mixer, passive speaker system

If you don't need PT M-powered check also for Focusrite Saffire 4x10 FireWire or Focusrite LE.

.. but Motu Ultralite could be perfect... as "little but professional" interface.

I own the MOTU Ultralite and the M-Audio Firewire 410 (I need at least 6 separate outs for the work I do, so something like the Duet isn't an option), and the Ultralite is WAY better. Build quality is rock solid and drivers are too. M-Audio build quality is cheap (both headphone outputs have crapped out) and M-Audio is notoriously bad at keeping up with drivers. (The 10.4.11 driver for the 410 is still in BETA, and 10.4.11 has been out for almost a year!)

The 410 has more flexible routing for it's ins and outs in the control panel it comes with, but unless you're doing something really specific with it, you don't need that. The Ultralite is an awesome piece and I highly recommend it.

Why not go for the Duet?

There are many restriction with Duet

1) No Midi IN/OUT included
2) -10 db output
3) no S/Pdif or toslink output
4) Unusable in case a Win-Bootcamp are installed for run some Audio app that works only on windows...
such as Atmosphere, Trilogy, Wave Lab, and so on!

It would be hard for me to recommend M-Audio anything. I'm not sure the budget is here but I've been looking into the Focusrite Saffire Pro 10 i/o which is able to be found for $440 American. I understand the D/A converters to be good, and the preamps are supposed to be as well- it'll probably be the one I go with. It is limited to 96k, unlike its bigger brother the 26 i/o, but that's what I like anyway.

Just my two cents, good luck, L

Fair points, but I'm curious as to whether or not any of those problems really apply to the OP. Whether or not #1, #3, and #4 are really restrictions depends on your needs/uses. If all you need is 2 in, 2 out, then the Duet is pretty solid. (The OP also mentioned another interface that would require a separate MIDI in/out).

Also, most Duet users agree that the unbalanced outs have little negative impact because the noise floor is so low.

But I definitely get what you're saying. I'm planning to buy the Duet in the near future, and these issues were cause for doubt for some time.

Thanks so much for your advice, everyone, and for the welcome to the Discussion Group.

I was very tempted by both the Duet and the Saffire, but decided in the end to go with Echo's AudioFire4, both for the quality of the converters and the price.

It seems that Echo products are not that well-known. I did have an Echo Layla at one time (no longer compatible) and was impressed with its sound and features. If I hadn't found such a good price on-line for the AudioFire, I might have gone with the Saffire - which does have more features for recording, but I'm not sure I need them at this point.

Thanks so much for the help in thinking this through. Now, on to the music!
