Can't send emails on iphone.

I can receive emails on my iphone, but cannot send them.
I am not sure when it stopped working because I don't send emails very often from the iphone.
I tried all the suggestions about changing the settings.
Nothing seems to work.
What should I do?

macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.10), ibook, iphone

Does Bellsouth.net have an authenticated SMTP server?

If not, you won't be able to send messages with the account using Bellsouth's SMTP server when connected via EDGE, or when connected to a wi-fi network other than your own unless the wi-fi network is using Bellsouth as the internet service provider.

Do you have a wireless network at home with Bellsouth as the internet service provider?

cwmx is at&t's SMTP server for when connected to the internet via EDGE if you have an email account that does not have an authenticated SMTP server. You cannot use this SMTP server to send messages when connected to the internet via Bellsouth, and you can't use Bellsouth's SMTP server to send messages when connected via EDGE, or unless you are connected to the internet via Bellsouth.

You should be able to send messages with the account using Bellsouth's SMTP server when connected to your wi-fi network at home with Bellsouth as the ISP.

I suggest deleting and recreating the account on your iPhone. This will lose any messages downloaded from the server by the iPhone's Mail client that are no longer available on the server, and any messages sent with the iPhone's Mail client.

The downside of using a POP account, and an account that does not have an authenticated SMTP server.

You may want to consider a Gmail account, which can be accessed as an IMAP account with any email client - on your computer as well as with the iPhone's Mail client. You can store sent messages on the server with an IMAP account, and all server stored mailboxes are kept synchronized with the server automatically with any email client used to access the account as an IMAP account. Gmail has an authenticated SMTP server so you can send messages with the account with Gmail's SMTP server regardless the internet service provider for your internet connection - via various wi-fi networks you have access to, and when connected via EDGE.
